Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toddler Toys

My 17 month old loves to play... with anything BUT toys. She has so many toys and what I thought was a good variety, but she is uninterested!! Can anyone offer suggestions for really engaging toddler toys?? She loves books and is VERY active. I would like ideas for things that can be played with her (parent/child games and activities) but also things she could play/engage in independently. Thanks!! :)

Re: Toddler Toys

  • My youngest isn't really a toy kid...he's more of an action kid.  He likes to be climbing, rolling around, physically doing activities.  Aside from Matchbox cars and building blocks, toys are totally hit or miss still at age 2.

We have a large play room and got him a trampoline with a handle as well as a Kangaroo climber and he has a blast.  He can jump, climb and slide.  I also got him a small tent and tunnel and he loves crawling in and out of those.  Those are my go-to, independent play things for DS2.  He still loves the elephant ball popper because he can chase the balls around.

He likes doing puzzles but someone has to be sitting with him still so that could be a good activity for you guys to do with her.  We build towers together with the blocks and he thinks knocking them over is hilarious.  Aside from that, he is just a physical kid and I've kind of learned to just work with that.  Pinterest has a lot of great ideas for indoor activities for active kids.

  • Thanks for the ideas! Sounds like my daughter has a lot in common with your son- very active! I like the trampoline idea and we have slides/playhouse, etc type stuff for outside.. maybe I'll bring some in! Thanks!! :)
  • What about a small inflatable ball pit? My DS loves nothing more than to dive in and tip it on its side causing all the balls to fall out

  • My daughter LOVES playing with a kids sized football.  Don't ask me why but I think she likes the way it wobbles around when she throws it AND it can't really get away from her the way a regular ball does.  Also like PP have said, bubbles and maybe side walk chalk would be fun too.

  • I like the play at home mom blog, as well as fun at home with kids. They have lots of great sensory activity ideas, which are a big hit at our house. DS, my active one, also likes his tunnel, trampoline, climbing on any furniture, sweeping with a full size broom, and our play kitchen.

We have one of these - it was a gift from my aunt.  DD loves it.  I actually pile a lot of her toys and stuffed animals in it and she'll just hang out inside it or crawl through it or even try to knock it over.  It's rather large in our living room but as DH says, this is all her space now.  We also have a rocker that she can climb onto.  I also spend a lot of time following her up the stairs and then bringing her back down since she likes to climb.

LO loves to vacuum with his play Dyson when I vacuum. He also plays with his wooden puzzles and Mega Blocks more than anything else. The play kitchen is a big hit as well in my house, and we play with his basketball hoop and ball outside when the weather is nice. There is a table and chairs in DS's room, so we'll sit and color with crayons together or build with his wooden blocks.

  • Wanted to add that you can use a small pool or a PnP for a cheap ball pit.

  • DS is also very active. He loves nothing more than ransacking my tupperware drawer, the play broom, his sister's play kitchen, and anything he can drag behind him. He's also into cause and effect toys- If i pull this string, Woody talks, if I push this button Buzz talks, etc.
