Large Baby

I went to the dr today and was told my baby already weighs 7 pounds, 7 ounces based on ultrasound measurements of LOs head and abdomen.

Dr predicts over a 10 pound baby & is afraid I won't make it to term. Now I'm terrified.

I'm a STM getting a RCS. My 1st LO was only 8 pounds 15 years ago and I'm now AMA at this point.

Do any of you moms have experience with large 2nd babies and RCS? My dr has me terrified.

  • How far along are you? I've heard that ultra sounds can be 1-2 lbs. off.

  • If it's any comfort my son was predicted to weigh 10+ lbs at an ultrasound right before I was induced. He came out weighing 8 lbs 5 ounces. This baby is also on track for 10+ lbs according to a growth ultrasound I just had. If you're having a RCS I wouldn't worry. Nothing you can do. I am worried only because I want a VBAC and I'd prefer a smaller baby to make that a little more likely.

  • 3rd tri growth scans are not super accurate. Unless you have been having regular growth scans starting before the third tri and a plotted chart of the results, I wouldn't start freaking out just yet.

  • My EDD is 5/1 and my RCS is scheduled for 4/28. Everything up until right now has supported that date.

Due to me being 40 YO, dr wants 2x week U/S and fetal monitor to watch my placenta health. So, he ordered an U/S today and all of this came of that.

Ok, so I'll calm down and take it with a grain of salt. I've been in a panic since my appt this afternoon.
  • @kat8805‌ the tech measured all three areas (skull, abdomen & femur) and they all were measuring +38 weeks.

    And you passed your GTT?

And also, I'm due 5/2 RCS currently set for 4/28, and at my 30w appointment LO was measured at 3lbs14oz. We have gotten to the point where the average fetus gains around one half lb a week until birth, so I expect LO to measure around 5lbs14oz at our next growth scan at our 34w appointment next week.

  • I made the dr look up the GD score. He said I scored 110 and it was great.

I'm so confused because it doesn't make sense to my brain. The U/S also said I had too much fluid. Maybe she's fulla-shit??

I'll let y'all know what my U/S Tuesday says... It'll be the same tech though.
  • Either your due date is wrong or your ultrasound tech sucks.

  • I think she just sucks. I had been keeping my cycle for 2 years before I got pg so I'm very sure about my LMP and nothing before now said anything was THAT far off.

Thanks Moms!! I'm breathing much deeper now. I wasn't breathing before!
  • Although it sounds like your measurements had to be off, extra fluid and big babies are both common with GD. Id maybe ask about checking a blood glucose or repeating the GTT.

  • Note: Our LO was measuring in the 76th percentile with that last scan, and I also measured at a 23 for fluid... and passed my 1 hour with a 114.

I think you need to request a new tech next time, and discuss how incompetent your Dr and tech are if they thought that wasn't something to immediately rush you back to another u/s for.

  • My last was over ten pounds at birth and still only measured around 5 at this point. Big babies are nothing to be afraid of but I think something was off here...

  • DS was predicted to be well over 10lbs I was terrified. He was born 7lbs 3oz no where near 10lbs.

  • I agree with the others that the measurements seem off and that they should do them over. I also think that if youhave both a huge baby and excess fluid, that they should consider having you do the GTT again

That said, I had a scan on Tuesday that said my 32 weeker is 6 lbs already. I do have GD though.

    ~All AL'ers welcome~

  • This could almost be a post on the "shit people say" but really- maybe get a second opinion and if your Doc is freaking you out- about a RIDICULOUS weight estimate- maybe it's time to switch providers
  • So my sister had an 11lb baby and pushed him out naturally. Not totally unheard of. She didn't ha e GD just a big baby but that was also in 1992 when you didn't get very many U/S's.

  • Oh dear! 15 pounds?!?!?! FFS!
  • Defintiely sounds wrong, but even if it's right your a RCS anyway, so no big deal...

  • I had an ultrasound at 29 weeks and baby was measuring in the 91st percentile at 3lbs 14oz so your measurment seems way crazy
BabyFetus Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • If you watch the screen when they are measuring, the slightest movement-- like millimeters -- changes the estimated due due by days. I just had an ultrasound today also because of LGA... I'm due May 19th and he was measuring April 28th- 90th percentile, 4 pounds, 15 ounces. No GD here either. I think the measurements might just be off a bit.
  • Ignoring the fact that the measurements have to be wrong, there are 10+ lb babies born vaginally every day. If you already are planning for a RCS then I don't see the big deal. It's not like you'll be pushing the kid out.

Disclaimer: yes I have had a c/s and I'm not saying they are a walk in the park. Just saying baby size is a little less important (as long as baby is healthy of course) during a c/s than a vaginal birth.
