Success after IF

High Normal Fsh!

Hi ladies.   I don;t  post often but I lurk constantly.....I have been trying to conceive #2 for about 8 months and am 36 years old....37 in June.   I went to an RE and had a cosultation and had my tubes checked and they were clear.    CD 3 blood work showed everything normal but she said FSH was elevated slightly at 8.644 which was just slightly off.

She wants me to try clomid next cycle or gave option of injections.   I am hesitant to start clomid because of the side effects I read about.....Don't know if we are
ready to go the IUI route yet...BUT maybe the higher FSH is telling me I should get moving.....I just had 2 chemicals in a row and am terribly anxious about this..Did any of you ladies have any of these issues and how were they resolved.    Any and all comments very much appreciated.  Thank you

I was unexplained IF and did my initial testing when I was newly 28. My FSH was almost exactly the same as yours. When I was 29, it was tested again and over 9. So, I wouldn't be a bit concerned about your FSH. I was a high responder during my IUI cycles and, while I needed a very high dose of meds for my IVF cycles, I did have 17 eggs in my successful cycle. What is your antral follicle count? That might be a better indication of how you will respond. I'm actually surprised your RE even brought up your FSH as an area of concern. For a woman in her mid 30s, that level sounds great!

If it were me, I'd move forward with IUIs as soon as possible. Not necessarily because of concerns regarding your potential response, but because of concerns regarding egg quality and age. Quality always trumps quantity and, unfortunately, quality can become a significant concern for women as we move into our late 30s.

    Best of luck to you!

ETA: I forgot to add- I never had any tricky side effects on clomid, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. I did have some thinning in my lining, so we switched to injectables for the next cycle, but I never felt poorly. Hope that helps ease some of your concerns!

  • I don't really think your FSH is that high, maybe borderline high but mine was also borderline high at your age and I went on to have three more children.

As for clomid, you could ask to use Femara instead which tends to have fewer side effects, including not thinning the lining like clomid can do.  Since you've never taken it before, my big thing would just be to have some monitoring done to see how many follicles you are producing on it.  You don't want to end up pregnant with eight babies!  If it were me, I would perhaps try a few cycles of just clomid or femara along with timed intercourse if your husband has no sperm issues (I'm assuming he's been tested.)  Then, if after two or three nothing, I would try IUI.  I wouldn't do the injectables until I'd done at least a few cycles with just the oral meds but that's me.  Does your insurance cover the meds and the monitoring and IUI?  That would factor into my decision as well.

Also, if you've had two chemical pregnancies, did your RE mention anything about perhaps taking a daily baby aspirin, adding in progesterone after you ovulate and maybe trying a steroid during your cycle to help you stay pregnant?

Did you have trouble conceiving your first? I didn't so having issues getting pregnant again came as a bit of a shock to us.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Yeah, that is not really high for 36. I would either keep trying or just do clomid.
