Scary Moment ended up being ok

So I was making myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich while holding baby girl and talking to my mom on the phone. Of course Ari reaches for the peanut butter jar and gets some on her hand. I don't think anything of it. I just take her hand and wipe off the peanut butter and put her down so I can finish making my sandwich. Once my sandwich is made, I decide to feed her before I eat because I know she's hungry. So while I am bfing her, I notice she has a mosquito bite like looking spot on her forehead. Then once I'm done and she's playing with her toys, I notice she has more spots on her face and on her hands. I open up her onesie and I don't see anymore on her body but they were increasing on her face and hands. They looked like hives so I call my DH and tell him that I think she might be allergic to peanut butter but she is acting fine otherwise. I get off the phone with him and decide to call her pedi because I didn't like how they came on so quickly. Well I ended up bringing her in to see the Dr. Her pedi says peanut butter is one of the most allergenic foods in the world. Ari wasn't having any anaphylaxis (sp?) reaction so we didn't have to do anything further other than keeping pb away from her. She said some babies/kids grow out of it. She gave her some benedryl and told me to give her a bath once we got home to wash away any remaining pb residue. So she's fine, but I was so worried on the way to the doctor that she would end up having breathing problems, and I kept looking in the rearview mirror (we have a mirror also facing her so I can see her) to make sure she was ok. Man, it's terrifying to find something your child is allergic to. I'm really hoping she grows out of it. Poor baby girl. I guess I just needed to get this out. Thanks for "listening".

Scary! I'm really glad she's OK.

FWIW, my friend's allergist (her DS is allergic to a whole long list of foods) recommends trying PB when they're this age, since they won't have as strong an immune reaction (theoretically) as they would if they had it for the first time when they were older. So...silver lining?

  • Sorry that ended up being so long. She also peed on me while I was giving her a bath and then dumped a water bottle on herself after she was all dry in new clothes. Sigh.. what a day...
  • Scary! Glad she is ok.
  • Sorry it's been a tough day! I'm with you after my garage incident this morning. Glad LO is ok!
  • Crap that's scary! Glad she is doing okay. I wouldve flipped.

  • Sorry! We are currently dealing with the same thing from a banana. My LO was getting red spots on her face and we had no idea from what. So we stopped giving her everything but oatmeal and cereal for a couple days until she cleared up, with the hopes of starting her again on solids with each new food for 3 days. Well last night we started with a banana and here we go... Poor thing has red bumps all over her face. I have no idea why they are only on her face though.
  • Glad she is ok :)

  • So glad your DD is okay and you caught it so quickly!!  My nephew has tons of food allergies, peanut/tree nut being one of the worst--we have learned a lot about them through his mom.  I am a little paranoid about allergies so I am still doing the "introduce one new food" every few days so I could isolate the cause quickly if LO had a reaction.

  • How scary!  I'm so glad you were able to notice it right away and get her to the pedi for evaluation.  I'm glad she is okay!
  • Thank you everyone. I'm sorry for all of you who are also dealing with food allergies and your LO's. It's not fun!
  • Sorry you had a scare but glad she's ok.

  • That's scary! At least it was a mild-ish reaction. Hopefully it means she will grow out of it. M had reactions like that to strawberries, but outgrew them by 18mo.

  • Oh my goodness.. Scary! I am going through a PB sandwich kick lately but it makes me extremely anxious as I'm afraid of causing reactions in LO. I think that's why I've been so slow to give her new foods.. So far only oatmeal, bananas, squash, and sweet potatoes. :(

I hope your LO doesn't have anymore allergy problems!!! No one needs that stress!!
