thrush or nipple vasospasm?

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and still nursing my 17 month old 4x a day.  In the last month I have had excruciating pain in the first 20-30 seconds of him latching on, I can handle that as I assumed it's just my nipple being sensitive from pregnancy.   But now, about 10 minutes after I nurse him I have this intense shooting pain that last's until I warm up my breast with a heat pad.   I never considered it to be thrush until my sister said it might be,  up until this point we've had zero issues with BF'ing.    When the pain is happening my nipple goes hard and all white at the tip of it, also DS has no sign on thrush in his mouth.  Any one have any similar experience with this, or tips?

Re: thrush or nipple vasospasm?

  • I've actually been dealing with something very similar (intense pain at latch, deep shooting pain after feeding, white spot on nipple).  My LC said the white spot could be a sign of a clogged duct but the other signs point to thrush.  She told me to focus on doing heat compresses as often as possible, lots of fluids and tons of nursing (which I know is a terrible tip when everything hurts so much!).  I've also been using a topical cream (it talks about it a little here: https://www.llli.org/faq/thrush.html)

Though I'm still in the midst of it, so I'm interested in what others have to say.  LC said that if it doesn't completely clear up in the next few days to make an appt to get oral medication for thrush.  Good luck to you!  Let me know if you find anything that helps.

Thanks guys!   I have my next Prenatal Dr Appt on Friday, so I will be sure to bring this up with him. I'm really hoping it's vasospasms Vs. thrush, unfortunately nursing more often isn't a option as I am trying my hardest to wean DS before baby #2 arrives, in the last two months I have weaned him from 8-10 feeds to 4 feeds in 24 hours, which I feel is a huge accomplishment.
    Thanks for the help!
