? From IF: Announcing Pregnancy vs Announcing Twins

Hi everyone - hope you don't mind me jumping on and asking a question. We have our first ultrasound tomorrow. We transferred two this cycle so there is the possibility of twins.

No one in our family knows we are doing IVF. (Only a few close friends know) We wanted to wait until we had good news to share. Hopefully we do after the appointment tomorrow.

Curious if you announced you were having twins at the same time you announced your pregnancy, or if you waited until you were further along?

Thanks!

Re: ? From IF: Announcing Pregnancy vs Announcing Twins

  • We did IVF and family and some close friends knew, but for everyone else we waited until 13 weeks and told them it was twins.  If I was just finding out and no one knew did IVF I might wait.

Early pregnancy was a really scary time for us. Nothing weird happened but I just couldn't bare the thought of announcing just to have to un-announce later. We told a few people in person in the beginning, told a few more when I was out of the first tri and did a formal announcement about our twins and their genders after the A/S at about 19 weeks. Good luck!!!

  • Thank you for your responses. My feeling is that we will tell our parents and close friends tomorrow after a successful ultra sound, but wait on a twin announcement (if we are blessed with two!) until later in the pregnancy.

Though the friends that know about the IVF also know we transferred two so the questions may come anyway ;)
  • We told my mom about the pregnancy and the twins at 6 weeks after my first ultrasound because I had to tell someone. Then we told everyone else at 12 weeks. I was scared to tell people but really excited too

  • I had a natural m/c @ 6 w pg.  Per my job I had to declare pg asap, so when I had a loss, I had to turn around and tell everyone basically "nevermind".  I got pg with my twins 6 weeks after my m/c.  We decided not to tell anyone it was twins until I was a little further along.

  • I told my family and one friend that the IF worked and after the first ultrasound we told them it was twins. At 13 weeks we made the public statement that we were expecting and it was twins. On Facebook we used the images from the nt scan
  • We got pregnant via IFV...so immediate family knew...My Mom and sister knew we were pregnant after our betas....but at 6weeks when we discovered both blasts took...we ended up telling DH's folks and siblings we were pregnant, with twins...and we told my Mom and sister it was twins...only close friends knew....everyone else we waited until 12 weeks to announce as that fell right at Christmas time.

  • A lot of people knew about our ivf, those who didn't know we are having twins now, they weren't told until 12w.

I have been open about ivf with anyone asking since :)
  • Thank you everyone for your responses!
  • My parents & aunt knew I was pregnant after we had our betas at around 4 wks, I told my mom, a few friends & my boss it was twins after our u/s at 7wks because they knew our struggles and IVF. My IL's knew around 9 wks and we announced to the world at 12 wks. DH was telling everyone and anyone that would listen right away, he was super excited & in shock!

OP, what have your betas been? Mine were pretty clear from the beginning, our RE actually told us that we should prepare, then at the 6 /7 week u/s it was confirmed. We told, well our son told, our family, but we did not announce the pregnancy or twins until 13 weeks.

Based on the beta calculator I found online they have been average.

  • We announced pregnancy to family around 6 weeks. We had already told our parents around 4 weeks. We planned to announce to everyone else at 12 weeks and got the shock of our lives that day with the revelation of twins. So we announced pregnancy and twins publicly on the same day.

  • We told a family and a few close friends we were expecting around 8 weeks - some knew it was twins and some did not. At 13 weeks we posted on FB and told everyone it was twins. I would just tell everyone because you are probably going to let it slip to a few people and then you have to track who knows and who doesn't. Good luck - I will keep an eye out for your intro over here :)

Yeah mine started at the high end for the 2 week and then more than doubled every 48 hours for 10 days, that's my REs protocol. It's not sure fire, and the averages swing wildly, but they are averages. On the other hand, with my son we were on the low end until the last beta.
  • We waited until 8-13 weeks to announce the pregnancy and for everyone but H's family we told about the twins at the same time. They were the last ones we told and we waited a few extra weeks to tell them because we knew they'd be the least supportive in any loss situation.

  • I told several friends and family members I was pregnant early on, but found out it was twins at 7 weeks, so I formally announced that we were expecting twins when I shared that I was pregnant.

  • I found out I was pg right at 4w. I told a handful of people then. After the first appt at 7w, we told a few more people. Then at 12w I had my first u/s and that's when we found out we were having twins. So at that point we went back and told people who already knew that it was actually twins, and shared the twin news with anyone we told about the pregnancy from that point on.

  • We told our families we were pregnant with twins the day we found out. My sister knew we were pregnant first. As for friends, we announced the pregnancy with a picture of DD1 in a "Big Sister" shirt that said we were expecting TWO little ones in December. We were 14 weeks when we anounced on Facebook. We live out of state so that is why we announced on Facebook.

    Good luck!

  • We told our families about the pregnancy and twins right after the 8 week ultrasound.  We figured if something happened at that point that we would need all the support we could get.  My husband can't keep a secret to save his life, so he told his boss and co-workers about the twins.  I just told my boss about pg and twins at 12 weeks.  She told her peers and the VP, but she's agreed not to share further for at least a few weeks.  I have some close co-workers whom I would like to hear it from me and not through the grapevine.
