Toddlers: 24 Months+

Birthday party ideas - 2 yr old

I am coming from the 12-24 month board and since all of you already had your LOs turn 2, I was hoping you could provide some ideas of what you did for their party? We are having 10-20 people (about 5 toddlers) over for DS' party and I'm not sure at all of what to do (or where to have it - home, park, etc) so can you just share what you did for your 2 yr old's birthday?

Re: Birthday party ideas - 2 yr old

  • We held his party at a local train museum.  They have a private room for parties we used.  The museum provided a train table with lots of Thomas trains, and the kids/parents were free to roam about the museum so I didn't have to worry about entertainment.   The kids alternated between playing with the trains, and watching the miniature railroad go by behind them.

His party was from 11-1, so we served lunch and cake and sent everyone home for naps.

  • What does your DS love?

Mine was into John Deere & tractors. We had close friends and family over. I made a cake and we did a treasure hunt with farmyard plastic animals in the backyard. We mixed them in with some hay on a tarp (for easy clean up). The kids had a blast playing in the hay.

I think 2 YO parties can be simple but still a lot of fun.

We rented a pavillion at a local park/playground and got Costco pizza and cake the morning of (submitted the order a few days before).  Inexpensive, and the kids had a blast.  Two year olds don't really do the whole "organized activities" thing well, so I found the games to be unnecessary.  They played on the playground, ate pizza and cake, and walked to the nature center to see the animals.

I also got balloons; the perfect toddler distraction.  Just make sure you have 1 for each kid (plus a few spares for the ones that pop).

ETA: My favorite parts were the no cooking and no ridiculous pre and post cleaning of my house.  The whole thing cost maybe $120, and that's because I went waaaaay overboard with the food/snacks/drinks and had a ton of leftovers.

  • We are having a small party for DS today just very close family. His big party is this weekend (so extended family can make it). We are doing a Thomas the Train theme. It's going to be simple cake and ice cream, presents, and visiting.

  • We got a company that came with a mobile petting zoo (bunnies, goat, lamb, etc) and a small pony for pony rides. Kids were wild for it and it suited ages 1-12 :)
  • @blue-eyedwife--Do you live in OKC? That looks just like our railway museum!
  • For my DD's 2nd birthday we just did close friends and family at the house.  Her birthday is in January so outside is definitely not an option.  I think 2 is a bit young to spend a lot of money on a party because they are too little to really take advantage of it.  At her party kids just played with her toys and her new presents and ate cake.  It was pretty low key.  Personally, I'd save the money till they are a bit older to really enjoy it.
