Shoulder pain?

I don't think this one has been discussed yet, and I have a theory. It may be completely stupid (hence, I'm not asking my dr about it) and Dr. Google said nothing about it so I'm asking you guys what you think...

Last night right after I went to bed I got this horrible shoulder pain that radiated down my arm. It wasn't sharp, like a pinched nerve, and it didn't feel like a sore muscle either. It was like a really bad ache. I've felt it before...after I had a laproscopy. I remember the dr saying then that it was referred pain due to the air that they pump into your abdomen for the lap. So I'm wondering...with everything moving and shifting around in there, do you think the same nerve could be affected to cause the same referred shoulder pain?

I know nobody here is a doctor, and if it becomes a concern I will certainly ask my ob about it. But I feel like my theory may be kind of far-fetched and I don't want to see his smirky-face again if I can avoid it. So 1, have any of you had this sort of pain before, and 2, what do you think of my theory?

Re: Shoulder pain?

  • Not sure about the nerves, but I know my shoulders hurt more lately because I am sleeping on my sides and I am not used to it. It's leading to a lot of shoulder and neck pain and my carpal tunnel is worse.

  • My boss told me kind of the same thing about my hands aching at different times. She said with everything moving and changing who knows what nerve the baby was pressing on or whatever. She is not a doctor lol but just wanted to say I had heard this too.

  • So... Before I even got to the laparoscopy part, I thought to myself, I wonder if it is gas pain?
I'm a nurse and a lot of our patients get it after surgery and I've heard of it being a problem with other GI issues to, so hopefully that's it! Sounds completely reasonable to this internet stranger!
  • Girl I am in the SAME boat! We flew to FL this week and the minute I sat jn the plane seat it started....got better when I got up and moved around but after flying back last night both of shoulder blades just ache so bad! Calling my chiropractor as soon as they open :/
  • Your joints loosen during pregnancy which can cause slipping which will cause pain to radiate down your arm. If you have naturally loose joints it will make the slipping more likely. It could also be pain from nerves or the gases that are attempting to escape. There are so many changes happening with out bodies that it's hard to determine which thing it is causing the pain.

  • DO you have carpal tunnel too? I have naturally loose joints, and frequent problems with my shoulder blade, which radiates down to my elbow and ends in numb hands. I've had a few sleepless nights from it all, it gets rather burny feeling. I have found stretching my shoulder, neck and back in certain ways returns the feeling to my hands so I'm sure something is getting pinched in some way. I'm going to have a neuro doc look into it once I"m not preg. (or if it gets bad enough now) since this is an ongoing problem. It may sound weird but a lot of my joint pains are indicative of food intolerances, and I notice this all flares really badly when I'm not paying attention to what I'm eating.

  • My thought was gas pain.  I had pain in my shoulder that sounds similar to what you're describing after DS was born (had a c-section) and was told it was gas pain.  Best relief they could offer was for me to move around to "get things moving."  Easier said than done 6 hours after surgery with a catheter still in me...

  • I don't have carpal tunnel, but the gas pain theory sounds logical. Especially since I usually try to hold them in in front of MH...poor guy is going to be in for a rude awakening lol.

  • I went to the Chiro....he said my back was all jacked up (no shit I said to myself). My lower back has started to curve in majorly....making me slump my shoulders whithout even realizing it.....combjne that with sitting in those God awful plane seats...major muscle knots. Got adjusted ans I am still sore but much better :)
  • During and after the C/S with DD I had terrible pain around my clavicle, and they said it was the gas pain PPs are talking about. Talk about ouch!! I don't remember if they told me any tips on how to make it go away.. Hope you feel better soon!

Why hold it in?? When DH side-eyes me for "releasing gas"....I tell him: this is YOUR fault :p hahaha
