So Lady Dix post about the 1.5 bedroom condo for $2.5 million got me thinking, how much home can you buy in your area for $2.5 million? I am always amazed at how the pricing for homes is so different across the country, and if I have some spare time I love to look at homes for sale in my area and think "what if". So who wants to play?

LOL I can't find a home for 2.5 where I live... I did a 20 mile search and this is in Hunterdon County, NJ 5 bd 4 1/2 bath, 10.34 acres

I agree. Around us you can get a beautiful 5 bedroom, 3 bath and about 2000 sq ft for 350K.

We can do this too. I purchased my home for almost $200K and it is 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 3,500 square feet on 2 acres.

So for 2.4 mil, you get a 4br 7ba, 9600 sq ft place. But it is up on a mountain with ridiculous views. Its amazing up in that area! And the attach a file button isnt working. Bastards!

I actually got really lucky when I found my home, it had been on the market for almost 8 years and had been banked owned for 6 of those years and the price had been dropped to almost half of what the original asking price was. I also purchased just after the housing market fell, If I was looking to purchase today I wouldn't be able to afford the houses where I live as they all start at $380K and higher. With my $200K I would be able to get 3 bedroom 2 bath 1500 sq ft house in a really bad neighborhood with practically no yard.

OK there are some 1bdrs but they're out of my hood.

I have a special deal for where I live. Which isn't a particularly nice area either.

hmm, my neighborhood doesn't have any 200k homes listed, I am in the city and there isn't too much variation from house to house in our neighborhood (which made looking easy). I found 2 for 250 online (I really don't think they'll get that much) and the rest are below 185. If I move to the neighborhood next to ours, prices really jump.

Found this one near where I work good schools probably close to zero lot line. 5 bedrooms 4 full baths 2 half 6700 sq ft. It would cost 3 mil to be on the ocean.

A $200,000 home in our area is typically a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom house built between 1940 and 1965. It runs anywhere from 1600 to 2000 square feet and sits on an average of a 5000-7000 square-foot lot.

I wouldn't say these are bad houses, necessarily, but most of the houses in that price range tend to require some heavy maintenance and/or have "quirks" due to their age -- plumbing issues, roof problems, asbestos tile, lack of insulation, random toilets in the laundry room, nuclear bunkers built into the basements...stuff like that.

We're renting a house now that would require a lot of work and is valued at somewhere between 190 and 215k.

Top photo is what you get for 250k. 4 bed 3 bath about 3,000 sq ft with a very tiny yard.

Second photo is 2.5 million. 9,000 sq ft 6 bed 7 bath, pool, on a golf course. Still not even on a full acre.

and 2.9 million. This is a 2.9 million home. What makes it worth 1.4 million more? It's on the ocean.

I live somewhat close to StafanieM522 and I am surprised she has 2 acres! That is awesome! We just purchased a home in October and for the city that I live in, 200k will get you a nice condo. Our condo that we now rent was 2 bedroom 2.5 bath for about 200k. Or it might get you a smaller house in a location that isn't ideal. But for a house it will get you an older smaller home. Or a house that needs a lot of TLC. Our house now was a little over 300k for 4 bed 2 full bath and 2 half bath on .25 acre. We also found that the newer the house the smaller the lot here.

In northern Michigan 2.5 million goes a very long way. 9 bdr, 7 bath 11,000 sq ft. on 11 acres with 300' lake frontage. Another one is a 6bdr, 5 bath 4,200 sq ft. on 150 acres. 200k gets you a 3-5 bdr, 2-3 bath 3000 sq ft. on 20-60 acres. Most houses range from 70k - 150k.

I'll play, although it's really no comparison with the exchange rate what it is.
$2.5 million is about ZAR26 million. I don't know anyone who has anywhere near that kind of money.

FWIW, our house cost ZAR2.7 million, three beds in a nice (close to schools and greenery, mountain view, close to city) neighbourhood.
