Who had an elective u/s with LO?

I'm think about getting an elective ultrasound for this baby in my hometown when we go to visit my mom and dad in April so they can join in on the fun of finding out what the baby is.

I'll be just over 17 weeks when (if) I get one. Is this far enough along to get a fairly decent shot at finding out the gender? Any recommendations in choosing a place? Anything I should know before booking?

Re: Who had an elective u/s with LO?

  • I did with both of my little ones. To say that I was impatient in finding out the sex is a serious under statement. With DD they wouldn't do a sex reveal until 16 weeks into pregnancy and then changed it by the time I was pregnant with DS to 15 weeks. With both of mine it was clear as day.

I didn't have to do anything to prepare, including having a full bladder. They didn't request that either time, which I realize they wouldn't need to if just checking sex.

We only have to places here for people to go and I think they are about the same. Good luck, it will be fun for you guys!

  • We had a 'sneak peek' at 17ish weeks and it was correct. Ours was free and under the radar at my ob's office (he felt bad that I had to have so many u/s and none of the techs took the time to give me a picture of the baby, only my shrinking mass)

  • I was 15-16 weeks along when we did ours. Just drink something before to get baby moving around!

  • We did one with the twins at 16 weeks 2 days.  They were very thorough and predicted the sexes correctly.  I read Yelp reviews to choose which place to go.  There's no preparation necessary!

The place I went was so cute.  The lights were low and I got to lie on a cozy mattress, which is so much better than the hard metal tables at the OB's office. There were nursery rhymes playing quietly in the background too.

  • I was just past 16w with Sean when I did my elective ultrasound. It was very obvious at that point. With DS1, my OB did the anatomy scan at 17w, so I didn't need to get an elective one. Both were very obvious and correct.

  • I did with both because I wanted my H to be there when we found out the sex and he was scheduled to be gone both times. With DD I was 17 weeks an it was very obvious! This time I was only 15w5d and it was still obvious, but I waited until my a/s this time before buying anything blue just in case since it was on the early side. I would say at 17w you are good to go!

  • We didn't find out what B was but can I just say how crazy is it to be able to find out what baby is at 16 weeks? I'm amazed! GL on your elective! FX they can get a clear shot!

Thanks! I was hoping that you would chime in @bobkat22! I think I'm going to go for it. The place I'm looking at has been around for a while...and turns out there are only two places in my parents town that do elective u/s, so it shouldn't be hard to choose.

I had one at DD at 30 weeks, so it wasn't to find out the sex, it was just to get a peek at her chubby little self.

As a birthday present, I was given a package that included hard copy prints & video on DVD.

Personally, if you're going to have the A/S at 20 weeks, I'd just wait till then to find out the sex, since it's only a difference of 3 weeks.

eta- sorry I missed you saying you want to go with your parents! Disregard that last part :)

  • I did it at 26 weeks but it was so Emma and Beckett could see the baby. I just got the basic package and it was still very cool. They gave us a ton of time and zoomed in to show us the baby's mouth moving and heart beating. We could see that she had a ton of hair too. And they used a big ass screen which was so different from the tiny monitor at the doctor's office. It was very cool.

  • We took my parents to an ultra sound (we actually live near two different ultra sound companies that let you sign up to be testers - so you get a free ultrasound while they play with new software, etc) and it was awesome.  My parents were blown away and it was seriously one of hte coolest things I did.. so sex or no sex - do it :)

I found out at 16-17w with both LOs. You should definitely be able to tell!
