Bedroom on different level from kids' rooms?

We're still house hunting and after two months and dozens of listings, we've found one that H and I both LOVE. The only downside is that the master bedroom is on the second floor and the other bedrooms are on the main level.

Would this be a big deal to you? DD is our only right now and she usually sleeps through the night but we do plan for another down the road. Seems like it could be a PITA for night wake ups but I love the rest of the house so much!

I never understood what the big deal is about this.  Our new house has the master on the first floor and other bedrooms on the 2nd floor.  People thought we were crazy - especially since we picked the floor plan!  It's not that big of a deal though.  They're only young for so long and in the future it will be nice to have some separation.

We moved in when DS was a little over a month.  He slept in our room until about 4 months old and then moved to his room upstairs.  We always had a video monitor which put our minds at ease.

  • That's good to know @ccam. I think it would be totally nbd if it was like you have. Far in the future I'm imagining how easy it will be for her to sneak out of the house if we're upstairs and she's on the main level! Lol.

  • It would be a big deal to me.  It was important that we were on the same level as the kids.  If I had to be on a different level from them I would prefer to be on the main level and have them upstairs.  Definitely not the other way around.

But it's definitely your preference!  If it's not a deal breaker for you - then do it, especially if you both love the house!

  • It would be a deal breaker for me personally. I wouldn't want to deal with it with night wakings for a baby or later with teenagers trying to sneak out.

  • We have all bedrooms on the same floor which is great now...however when I think long term- I would love to have our bedroom on a different floor!  I think if you love it- it should not be a deal breaker.  For the first few months the baby can sleep in your room and then when you are ready to move the baby ( or once it starts sleeping through the night)  you can get a monitor or video monitor.

  • I say go for it. Our master bedroom is on the main level out of the back of the house and DD's bedroom is upstairs. She stayed room the first 4-5 months and then we moved her into her room. It has been fine. We have a regular monitor and were lucky she started sleeping through the night early.
We will probably take the same route with the next one.

  • Thanks for the thoughts everyone. Looks like its moot because we can't qualify for a mortgage for this one. We could afford the monthly payments but my H's credit is bad so the mortgage has to be under my name only. And I don't make enough by myself to get a large enough mortgage. Sigh.

I'm going to mourn this house for a couple days then we'll get back to looking, I suppose.

  • :(  I'm sorry to hear that!  You'll find the one!

  • I am sorry about your house - I know how heartbreaking it can be to lose one once you have started seeing your family in it. Think positive - the market will soon be flooded with the Spring listings. You can probably get a better price in a little bit.

As far as the different floors go, we live in a bungalow have the same problem. Until our oldest was 5, we were all in the tiny rooms on the main floor, then we moved her upstairs into the master bedroom. We were just too uncomfortable having them below us. Our situation is a bit different, probably, because our neighborhood borders a not so great area of a city famous for being not so great and we occasionally have problems with break-ins. If we did not live where we do, our opinion on house layout would probably change.

  • We are reverse, they are upstairs and we are down. I love it because we put them down and they are out of our way while we relax or get things done. The separation is great. I do have a monitor but I can hear them.
  • I would do it.  It would be nice when the kids are older.  Would the master be large enough for you to keep future babies in your room until they are STTN?  Or maybe the downstairs nursery would be large enough for a twin or double bed so you could sleep there until future babies STTN?  Those are a couple of options I see.

I'd like our next house to have two master suites.  That sounds weird, but DD is our one and only and I don't want to share a bathroom with her forever.  Some houses have one downstairs and one upstairs, so we might be looking at the same arrangement in the future.
