still using bottles

My LO mastered the sippy cup at around 13/14 months but still wont take them in the morning and night. We are in such a rush in the morning and i didnt want to deal with the meltdown so we are still allowing the bottles 2 times a day and hes fine with the sippy cups at other times.  Is anyone else still using bottles?  I plan to go cold turkey soon.

He was 18 months on 2/24.

Re: still using bottles

  • We're not using bottles but my LO likes her milk in straw cups. Have you tried that instead of a sippy? I think it probably gives them some sucking satisfaction like the bottles do.

  • Jacqueline takes a bottle at night before her bath. She has milk with cereal in it (by drs orders because of her weight) and she does well with that. She doesn't get them, or ask for them, during the day. She won't accept a bottle, unless it's bed time. We'll get away from it at some point, but currently we're in no rush.

  • Same here, bottles morning and night. My sister's kids took them until they turned 2 so I am not worrying about it until then. Sort of picking my battles, I guess - at least he is drinking his milk!
  • Same here morning and night unless I am home in the morning then she doesn't get a bottle.   I would stop cold turkey now but SO will not get on board.

DD has used sippys all the time except right before bed since 12 months. We still used a bottle at night until a few weeks ago, when we switched to the sippy and she was fine with it.

  • We were using bottle at nap and bedtime until about 10 days ago.  Her daycare did drop the nap bottle in December and encouraged me to try it as well, since she was drinking her milk out of a cup so well there.  We started with bedtime on a Monday and the switched to the cup at nap on the weekend.

If I were starting on my own (without my daycare provider having done the grunt work!) I would do what she did and start offering milk cups during snack and lunch, and then once she warmed up to be able to drink a cup of milk during the morning, drop the naptime bottle.
  • DD never liked sippy cups. We started using the cups with the straws and I really credit those with helping us to get rid of the bottle around 11 months.

  • We cut out all bottles when DS was 13/14 months.  We started off by introducing cups with straws a couple weeks before just so DS could get the hang of it.  Once we knew he could drink out of the sippy cups we got rid of all bottles.  We packed them all away so we wouldn't be tempted to give it to him and DS never ended up asking (aka crying) for one.  He ended up not liking the straw kind of cups after a while and now just has a regular sippy cup.

Our pediatrician recommended we cut out all bottles at our 1 year visit but since we were leaving on vacation the next month we figured we'd wait to fight that battle until after vacation.  Our pediatrician also told us to give water at night instead of milk because it could lead to dental problems if DS didn't brush his teeth after drinking the milk.  Something about the sugar in milk and potential cavities. There was no way I was going to have DS, who was almost asleep, brush his teeth after drinking the milk.  Before yes, after no.
