IKEA Expedit

Have any of you used the Ikea Expedit as a changing table (with an added changing pad on top, obviously)?

(I included a picture from google in case you don't know what the Expedit is)

I can tell it's about the right height and I feel a bookshelf would be more useful in the long run then a dresser (there's a good sized closet in the room). We plan to cloth diaper and I guess my concern is that we'd use bins for diaper organization instead of drawers and I'm not sure if I'd miss drawers...

Re: IKEA Expedit

  • We have one for toy storage, and love it. IMO you would need to add feet to make it the right height for changing, we use the hemnes dresser and it's perfect. I will say I couldn't have my toddler in a room with this as a dresser because everything would be on the floor all the time.

Didn't consider the mess factor - thanks ladies!

  • I think you'll want a closed area to put all your supplies in. We have one and I think it is pretty narrow

  • We have an expedit set as a changing table now. I chose the 4 slot expedite. We use the bottom two with tall bins to store diapers and the top two have shallow bins to things like thermometer, diaper cream, etc

I am tall and have no issues. 5'10". I love my Expedit. Our house is full of them and my entire classroom :)

This blog, Young House Love, recently did a good makeover of it to make it more suitable for a changing table.

That's exactly where I got the idea :) Love their blog!

  • We have it in the bigs room for toys. Love it but it's too low for changing IMO. We have the hemnes dresser with a changing pad on top and it's perfect.

  • I would think too low as well, unless you can add some feet. My back was very sore from leaning over to change DD on our bed. I could not believe the difference when we switch to a change pad on the dresser. Our nursery also has a large closet that stores all her clothes. I use the dresser for diapers/wipes, socks, receiving blankets, crib sheets, baby toiletries (Tylenol, nail clippers, aspirator etc). I still have 2 empty drawers but I figure I'll fill them eventually.

  • I use a changing pad on a dresser.  Didn't bother with a changing table.  I have the Expedite in our playroom which is great for toy storage but would not be suitable for a changing table, IMO.
  • Wow, that blog is amazing. I would definitely do it!
