This is why I hate tv doctors!

I've mentioned in past posts that I hate Dr. Oz. My Mom is aware of this. She just called me begging for me to watch his show today. Without knowing what it's about, I immediately said no. She said it's about the dangers of artificial sweeteners. I have gestational diabetes and was told by 2 doctors and the dietician that Splenda was ok while pregnant. Now I only used it for baking a birthday cake. I don't drink sodas, or diet ones unless I get a rare craving. I've been really good and don't usually indulge in any of my cravings (which makes me wish I did before getting GD). One craving I've constantly had was pudding. So I recently bought sugar free pudding, which I haven't even tried yet.

My Mom tells me I'm ignorant for listening to my TWO doctors over a tv one. So I asked her what should I do? Suffer with what little foods don't raise my sugar and never ever have any treat of any kind? again I'm not downing a sleeve of oreos with or without sugar. She said yes. Now I got really pissed because she's been overweight (many doctors have warned her about it) since I can remember and NEVER does anything or stick with a diet. I've even gone on diets with her to make her feel better, and it always turns out that she went back to her old ways. The jerk that I am told her that maybe she should try no sugar, no sweetener, and my personalized meal plan. I know some of you will agree with her, but I don't like having someone tell me what I'm doing wrong with my diet when they didn't go to my dietician or doctors. I know how little sweetener I consume anyways, so I'm not really worried. But now I know that if any little thing is off with my baby, my Mom is gonna scream that it's the sweeteners fault. Ugh, this counts at my Monday bitch fest. Vent over....

Ugh, that's so irritating. I'm not a fan of Dr. Oz either.

Not all artificial sweeteners are the same. There are some that don't cross the placenta. I'd think your OB would know what to recommend for your particular situation better than Dr. Oz 8-|

Sorry your mom is being so ridiculous!

  • I'm so with you. (Full disclosure: I'm also a Diet Pepsi addict)

Doctor Oz is awful. I liked him in the beginning, like during his Oprah days, but I feel like now he gets his ratings by scaring people.

Anything can be unhealthy in high quantities. Just remember "everything in moderation" and there's no need to stress out about this stuff.

  • It's good to know that I'm not being crazy or paranoid. I just couldn't stand her calling me ignorant as if I made up my diet plan and recommended lists myself. Stupid Mondays!

  • all I lived on was Splenda and my ob said to stay away from it so I use truvia and it's really good and all natural
  • Dr Oz is beyond irritating. I've never watched is fear mongering show, but he rubbed me the wrong way when he was on NY Med a couple summers ago. In one scene he went in the break room and had all the nurses open their lunch containers so he could critique their meals!

All sugar, including Stevia and Truvia, is still processed in some way. Some just more than others. If you're really concerned about "all natural" sweeteners, try honey or maple syrup (unless you have a condition that doesn't allow it, obviously).

  • I agree with disliking dr oz. I am not a fan of artificial sweeteners, but it really sounds like you aren't eating much of them anyways. Not that it matters what I think about them, just saying. I wouldn't talk to your mom about what you eat anymore. If she asks, lie. You're an adult you don't need to tell her what you eat. Eat your pudding! Yum, now I need pudding.
  • Artificial sweeteners are such a controversial topic these days.
Personally, I've eaten/drank things for YEARS that had if (diet sodas, sugar free candy, etc). Since becoming PG, the taste of the artificial sugars are nauseating so I've gone the more natural route BUT I absolutely agree- it's ok to indulge on an 'as needed' basis. Your doctors are catered to you and your pregnancy. Dr. Oz is speaking to the general public about a consensus based on opinions.

Plus, we're all doomed anyway. It seems any and everything that enters your body is bound to cause issues of some sort. I have learned to stop reading all the nonsense articles and doing what works best for our family.

Seriously? That's a jerk thing to do!

  • well I did truvia because dr said it was perfectly safe and the others weren't but yes maple syrup or other natural sweeteners would be better but I hate maple syrup and honey lol agaves not bad though
  • Dr. Oz is a modern day snake oil salesman. The only reason he even indorses diets and products are because he is getting paid to do so! Every other week I hear about the new "miracle weight loss diet/pill/cleanse" that is supposed to be better than the last but they are all just typical gimmicks.

  • Ugh, how annoying. There's a lady on my FB who quotes Dr. Oz on just about every health-related post I make. I have a hard time taking seriously any doctor who's so obviously just spouting off information his hundreds of sponsors require him to regurgitate.

You don't sound too worried about the sweetener thing (good for you!), but you might want to pass this video on to anybody who questions you. I find this guy's videos very informative.

  • I got a "Free first copy" of the Dr. Oz magazine the other day. Sadly, it's real.

Don't forget super fruits. Every week it's a new super fruit!

I have a friend who works at a grocery store, and he gets asked all the time about the Dr. Oz diet. His response to every person is, "It changes weekly, so I'm not sure which one you're talking about." If people went by everything he said, they'd all be living in bubbles drinking their own urine!
