Another Vacation Question

As I mentioned in the cruises post, we are looking at many options as far as vacations go.  DH was looking up vacation ideas and read somewhere that Puerto Rico is a great place to vacation because it's inexpensive and has many fun things and great beaches, and you don't need a passport to go there.  I don't know much about it and I've been looking it up, but I'm curious if any of you have been to or vacationed in Puerto Rico, and what you thought?  Where should we think about going?

Re: Another Vacation Question

  • H and I went summer 2012 without the kid. We went to San Juan. We rented a condo by the beach and walked to the old town for dinner pretty much every night. We rented a car and hiked through a rain forest one day. Went to a casino one night. Bars other nights. We didn't have any problems and stayed in touristy areas.

It was alright but I wouldn't go back or anything. It's not really my type of vacation place. I prefer to walk and explore new cities and I felt kinda limited. We did stay in the touristy areas but it was SO touristy and I don't really dig on "manufactured places" if you will.

  • I love Puerto Rico. I always went to visit family but also did the touristy thing often. The great thing about PR is that the island is small so you can travel throughout it, visit the different sites and cities and you'll never be stuck in the car for long.

I would recommend staying in San Juan but if you rent a car you can travel to the rain forest, the caves in Camuy, you can do cave tubing and zip lining in Utuado, visit Ponce down south, Mayaguez on the west coast. The bioluminescent bays are amazing! (There are two). You can take a short boat ride over to Culebra for some great beaches or visit the world famous ice cream shop in Lares which has hundreds of flavors including ones like rice & beans (I kid you not!!).

There is a lot to do and if you're able to drive I think the possibilities are endless. It's more of a "do & see" vacation for me versus a "lay on the beach" vacation.

Oh, did I mention the rum distilleries?? Bacardi in San Juan and Don Q in Ponce.

  • I have only been for the day on a cruise.  We were in Old San Juan and went to Bacardi for the tour which was excellent!  I wasn't impressed with the beaches and did not find it as pretty as some of the other islands I have been to.  I have friends who are from there and I think the only way I would return is if I went with them and skipped the touristy places all together.  The food was great though!
