S/O returning for assessments

My baby is going when she is 15 months, 13 adjusted and it's coming up.  She's going to fail because she is totally in her terrible 2's already.  I know she can stack blocks, but if I ask her to, she throws them off the table one by one, or with a hand sweep.  I know she can play ball, but if someone gives her a new ball, she'll just bite on it.  I know she can say many words, wave, and clap, but she is unlikely to do any of these right when I ask her to...  She thinks crayons are for a game in which she furiously crawls away and tries to bite them while I chase her, although I have seen her scribble and find joy in it.  Grrr.  She can't yet walk and she can't really use a cup or a spoon in an acceptable way, but I just feel like they'll think she can't do ANYTHING when she just bites and drops all their testing items.

Re: S/O returning for assessments

  • Thanks guys.  She did well at 6 months, but that was just because everything was intuitive.  I'm sure I'm stressing out for nothing.  It's not like it even matters if she does badly.  I'm just getting tired of her going to things (like preemie playgroup) and getting judged when I know she has more abilities.  Plus, she just seems to really enjoy acting against authority...

  • Heh, if she does not put the blocks in the container...I mean, she does that all day every day, so she'd better do it!  The preemie playgroup is fun, but the leader is a physical therapist and is very judge-y.  She always asks people personal questions like if you're breastfeeding after like 5 minutes of being there.  The group supposed to help mothers who may not be equipped, but I just feel like it comes off as, "how are you falling short?"  My LO seems further ahead of a lot of the kids in that group, but she always acts like the least competent--I will whisper, get the Elmo ball, and she'll get it.  But then all anyone sees is that she's sitting there chewing on a ball.  I hope your LO talks, but if not,  we just have to remember that one assessment is not the end-all.
  • During our assessments, if she wouldn't actually perform the behavior or activity, they would ask me if I've seen her do it, and she would still get credit. The assessment sheet was filled with "O"s and "I"s, for Obseved behavior or Informed of behavior. Good luck!

  • We're actually the opposite case -- our girls find those settings absolutely sensory overload. A small room, three therapists firing questions and trying to get them to do varied tasks -- DD1 was over it already (having just been through a 30 minute car ride and an hour-long hearing screen), while DD2 just kind of shuts down in cacophonous environments. Not sure how much "credit" they get for stuff I say they do versus that which they actually perform for them...

Judged at preemie playgroup? Sheesh. Like any of us need more of that crap.
