Projectile spit up v. Vomit?

My LO spit up the entire contents of her stomach today...twice. My question is-what is the difference between a big projectile spit up and vomit? Everything that came out of her looked and smelled like watery milk. She does not have a fever. Now that she's cleaned up and calmed down she seems fine. But I don't know what the problem was (did I over-feed her? Was it gas? Did something I are or drank today disagree with her? Does she have reflux? Something else?) and if it is spit up v. Vomit? She is 3 weeks old today, breastfeeds, and this is the first time this has happened. I plan to call the pedi in the am but am curious what y'all have to say.

Thanks,
Scared and exhausted FTM

Re: Projectile spit up v. Vomit?

  • How was she acting before it happened? DD has reflux and without meds she is screaming in pain after eating and then spits up.

Chances are it's just spit up. But I'd call the pedi to help ease your mind. I know it can be scary.

  • That's happened to me once. It scared me but he seemed fine and was even acting like he was hungry after.
  • My guy spits up a ton. As long as she was happy and didn't seem distressed everything is fine. Sometimes it's still hard for me to grasp, but what they spit up isn't really as much as it looks, it probably wasn't the entire contents of her stomach, but I know I've said that a couple times too!
As far as vomit, someone told me you will know if it's vomit. I guess the smell is not pleasant.

  • With DD2, who had significant reflux and was medicated for it....when she spit up, it was impressive. I would have called it projectile. It wasn't a dribble down her face. It got air. You could hear it hit the floor, and it was usually a puddle.
  • It sounds like spit up, but when in doubt, call your doc.

My LO has had impressive spit ups since day one, and it's getting much, much worse as she gets older (she's 2 1/2 weeks old today).
  • DD has done this a couple times when she had a really big burp. My pedi said that if it doesn't smell like acid and not a weird color, then it's spit up. I'd say give it a few more feedings. If it's happening a lot, call your doc.
