Maybe a dumb question from STM

I posted earlier that DD has a stomach bug and that I've had increased BMs today with diarrhea this evening. Tonight I keep feeling like I have to go again but nothing is there except a little gas. The cramping, however, is there. With my first I had menstrual like cramps and no diarrhea. Can diarrhea cause contractions? It's hard to say if these cramps are menstrual or diarrhea-like. I am trying to avoid calling the doctor and going in if I don't have to because DD is sick and we don't have close family around to watch her. I suppose I should try to time them but they feel more like a constant ache. Ugh. The timing of all this is so horrible.

  • Also, I realize how dumb this post looks now. I realize diarrhea can cause contractions. I guess I'm just looking for moral support and no-labor vibes.

  • Sounds like the belly bug. Mine growled and churned for 24 hours before anything happened. I had bm and vomiting until I got contractions. By the time we got to hospital they were over 1 min long and under 5 apart, plus fever. They gave me fluids and zofran, I was all better and home within 3 hrs.
But yes being stomach sick will absolutely cause contractions.

Drink water if u can hold it down!
  • Sending you no labor vibes till your little one gets to feeling better. Try to get some rest in case it is go time tho. Good luck
  • Any fluids you can get in will help/ Gatorade maybe?!? Dehydration will trigger labor as well.
Drink drink drink and lay around :)
  • Unless I am mistaken, I think contractions can cause diarhea (many women I know tend to get diarhea around their periods due to the cramping and I think I read diarrhea is a sign of early labor).  But even if they are labor contractions, if they're not timeable (just the constant menstrual-like ache) then it's probably not time to go yet.  Good luck!

  • Nope not a dumb question. Yes diarrhea can cause contractions. All your organs are smooshed together now so it's common. I'd think your doctor couldn't do much anyway so just keep your fluids up and try some Imodium if it gets too bad! GL lady! No fun feeling crappy!
