EP'ing and supplementing with formula

Moms who are doing this, how do you do it? With dd I had a huge oversupply but as of now that is not the case with DS. I am barely able to keep up with how much he is eating and had a bit of panic today when I spilled some milk as I was preparing his bottle because it was the last of what I had left from my last pumping session.

At his weight check I expressed my concern to the pedi (it was not our regular dr and was actually my least favorite pedi in the practice). He basically blew me off and said if LO is eating 2-3 oz and I'm pumping 2oz he doesn't see the issue. After trying to explain that pumping 2 does not cover eating 3 I finally just said forget it I would talk to our regular pedi next week.

So, do you add formula at each feeding or every other?

Re: EP'ing and supplementing with formula

  • My supply is super low - I'm only pumping about an ounce total every 2-3 hours. So, I'm using 2 pumping sessions worth for a feed. Every other bottle is formula. She seems to take to it well. Pediatrician said however we wanted to do it was fine - mixing or giving separately. Since we started this way and it seems to be working, that's what we're going to keep doing. When she starts eating more, not sure what we're going to do.

(On mobile and info is out of date - my LO is 16 days old).

  • I keep mine separate because she doesn't always take the full amount I plan on giving her and I want to make sure all the breast milk goes to her. I'd rather waste formula then my milk.

So I pump give her what I got and then give the rest in formula.

At night I feed just formula as I feed then pump and save what I pump until morning.
  • I have little to no milk. I pump so that I know how much he's getting (he lost a lot of weight when I was having no luck bfing) and dr wants me to keep up w it. I always give him my milk first since it's so good for him, then I go back and make formula in that same bottle. If I pumped an ounce (that's a great day), I'll give him 1 oz formula. He's usually satisfied. In the night I give him 2.5 oz bc he's usually satisfied for longer without waking.
  • Last time when we weaned dd off of bm and onto formula (when I returned to work and my freezer stash ran out) I mixed but I like the idea of making sure he gets all of the bm possible by keeping them separate. I will have to try that out tomorrow and see how he takes to the formula. Thanks ladies!
