Group B strep and labor

FTM and just found out I have a 4+ colonie of Group B Strep and understand I will need IV antibiotics during labor. For those moms who have already given birth with this, how did it change your labor? I would like to be up and moving as much as possible but worry I won't be able to with the IV

Re: Group B strep and labor

  • If you search we've discussed this quite a bit over the last few weeks. But I will say an IV does not prevent you from walking and I could be wrong, ask your doctor, but I think you only have to be hooked up to the iv antibiotics while they are administered unless you are getting other fluids. But to be sure how your hospital does it, ask your doctor.

  • The IV antibiotics hang on a pole that has wheels you can walk with it. And your not on it the whole time just for the designated amount of time that medicine needs to infuse
  • That's a great question for your care provider and what specifically it will mean for you and your labor.

  • Thanks ladies! I am mobile bumping and not quite searchable. I saw the NP today and all she said was IV antibiotics (the doc was at a delivery). Glad to see it didn't really have an impact. I'm a FTM and nervous about anything out of the "normal".

  • Don't worry, like PPs have said, it doesn't have to change things too much. I had it with my first, and it really was no big thing. I was able to walk around, get in the shower, the tub, etc. The one thing I would say is ask for a hep lock specifically (they will probably do it as a standard procedure, but check anyway) so it's easy for them to take it out and put it back in as necessary.
  • I was induced and got N epi So I was strapped to the bed anyway so it didn't chNge anything for me
  • I was GBS +. If I had a "normal" delivery, I would have been hooked up to get the meds and then unhooked to walk around etc.

However, being induced, I was on fluids and pictocin ASAP so they just added in the penicillin. I wasn't able to get up much anyways.

Congrats to my TTC buddy Madeline! Cheering for all the strong 3T ladies!
