She does have point out that everyone should be able to have one, regardless of income.

ETA: Some people have given her suggestions of cheaper ways to get one. but no one has said don't do it.  I don't know if I should chime in and tell her I think no.
  • I think no as well, its not really a fundraiser type thing to me. Does this person even want a doula? I didn't want one and i would have been upset if someone else got me one because they thought i needed it and then I would have felt like i had to use them.

Yes she wants one. she was asking if people though it would be okay for her to set up a gofundme for the doulas because of the cost.  they don't have a lot of money and I think she is the type of person who will really benefit from using one (anxiety and depressive issues) so I can see why she had the idea for the page. but I do think it's tacky.
  • It's tacky. Like @LauraT25 said if some one asks what you need say your saving for a doula.

Maybe she should check into a midwife who would be present at more of her birth than the typical MD. In an ideal world, this service would be provided, but realistically, the cost is too high to have this included in addition to other hospital staff. Maybe RNs cross trained as doulas? But any hospital staff that works one to one w/ a patient costs $$$, either to insurance or to the patient. As a highly trained hospital staff member, I have a hard time when people think everything should be included, it all comes at a cost. I'm still paying for my education and have gone more than one year w/o a raise due to hospital cut backs. Sorry, rant over.
It was standard practice at the hospital I delivered at to have a 1 to 1 nurse during delivery. My nurse was with me the whole time (although they would switch off if you went over the time of their shift).
  • I had a 1 to 1 RN while I labored all day and about 3 RNs while I pushed for 3 hours then ended up with my csection.

  • Reading fail on my part but I still think setting up a fundraiser for a doula is a little.tacky.
