Talk to me about your choice of pacifiers...

I have been using the hospital type binkies...the soothies for LO. A chiro at my birth center the other day stopped me and said I should be using the ortho pacis instead because of the whole ruining the mouth/orthodontic thing. Curious if you all use orthos, if its a huge deal for her not to use them right now, etc. I gave her an ortho tonight while she was passed out and she held onto it okay. I just love her dang wubbanub bc it's so much easier for her to keep in her mouth and I know it will become even more awesome when she's older.

  • We use the wubbanub too.  I used soothies with DD1 & DD2 and it has not been an issue.  Also, wish I would have invented the wubbanub.  Such a simple thing... that saves us a lot of searching!

  • DS will not take an ortho binky. I have tried so many.
We use the gumdrop ones or the avent kind. He loves those!

Thank goodness for now she only takes it to fall asleep and then spits it out. Sometimes she doesn't even take it to fall asleep. Hopefully we can keep it that way!

  • My LO will not take Mam, Nuk, or Gumdrops. But loves her soothies. I don't have an issue with not useing an ortho soother, because it's not like she will have it all the time.

  • We have tons that were gifted from out shower, MAMs, tommee tippee, and a few others but LO will only take the NUK we got at the hospital, go figure! Thinking about getting a wunbanub

  • DD takes the gumdrop ones-we got them at the hospital. DH tried a NUK, and she doesn't seem to like that one as much.

  • LO only seems to like the Soothies currently.

  • We have tried 3 different kinds (all shower gifts) and LO only likes the soothies. We only use them at night (and on the rate occasion that she is screaming and nothing else seems to soothe her).
  • My LO hates the soothies, the only one she likes are the mam. We've tried the tommee tippee kind, she didn't like those.
  • My kid likes mam newborn paci the best.. My 21 month old took regular soothie and the avent ones.. And u can attach paci plushies buddy from nookums sold on amazon to attach to the paci..

  • We just had a pediatric dentist come to my mommies group today to speak about this. He said that the main concern is if the nipple is straight. You don't want to use a pacifier with a curved or slanted nipple (some orthos are tilted which isn't recomended).
  • We use the soothies and the wubanub for our LO (@rosiepeare we don't give wubanub overnight or unsupervised), but would honestly use whatever paci LO would take.

My rational for not being concerned with pacis:
Most kids are going to need orthodontics anyway. Most kids are going to be weaned of a pacifier at a very young age (thumb and finger sucking can last a looooong time). Agreed with PPs, that it won't be in their mouth 24/7, and you have more control than with thumbs/fingers.
  • LO loves the soothies, but didn't care for the the advent ones.
  • I think we have every variety there is. Ds seems to have a flavor of the week. He was real partial to the wubanubs then decided he hated it and will only take the nuk type ones right now.

Anyone know if there is a wubanubs type thing for other pacifiers?

  • DD will only take MAM newborns. we have a ton of NUK's so hopefully she grows to like them!

  • Wubbanub has been the most successful but she really doesn't want the paci. Not surprised- my others didn't take it till they were much older. They both liked Avents.

  • @KazDuck918 why did the pediatric dentist say to avoid a curved or slanted nipple?

My DD will suck on anything put in her mouth. We've tried soothies, gumdrops, mam, and nuk. I prefer the nuks because they seem to stay in her mouth the best.

I guess it can rub on the hard palette which can lead to problems when teeth start erupting.
