Cloth Diapering

GMD Workhorse Fitteds ?

I didn't switch to cloth until my 2nd was around 4 months old so I have a pretty good stash of one size diapers for an older baby.  For #3, I would like to start earlier.  I don't want to spend a ton since I know we have a stash to move to.  So, after doing a lot of reading, I think I'm leaning toward a combo of GMD prefolds and workhorse fitteds.  My question is choosing the size...my first two were both over 9 lbs at birth. I was thinking of getting the yellow-edge smalls in both in the hopes that I could use those from birth (well, after the umbilical stump falls off) until I can transition to my one size diapers.  If you've used these, when did your baby outgrow them?  And, any newborn or small diaper cover recs to use with these?

Re: GMD Workhorse Fitteds ?

  • LO was 9lbs at birth. She fit in her orange edge prefolds for about 3 weeks. I think we could have skipped over the orange edge and we would have been fine. She outgrew the yellow edge around three and a half months. The workhorses are great, but I would get the ones without snaps. Personally, I think they last longer.

We have used Thirsties size one covers and they have worked out great!

  • I am going through the newborn stage now. Based on the size of your previous babies and the time you are looking to use them, I think small would be a great size.  I know some people start with the newborn and then skip the small and move to medium.  But I skipped the newborn and went right to small and it has worked great for me.  The small was a bit bulky at first (my LO was 8 lbs 1 oz) but they were still wearable.  And I am sure they will fit her until she is ready for OS.  I like the Imagine newborn diaper covers.  Oh and I went w/ snapless and use a snappi for a custom fit.
  • I skipped orange prefolds and started with smalls. My LO was 5lbs 9oz and it worked fine. At almost 8 months we are still in smalls, but they are starting to get harder to snappi, so we will probably move up soon. We did have some newborn workhorses. We outgrew them probably around 3-4 months, but again I had a super tiny dude. The yellow edge prefolds worked well with prowrap newborn covers, blueberry minis and thirsties size 1. I would skip the newborn prefolds if you are expecting a big baby.

  • DD is 4 weeks - 8 lbs 10 oz at birth and orange edge fitteds are my favorite of our entire newborn stash. They are one of the only ones that aren't leaking with my super soaker baby (SoftBums Echo shells with mini pods are coming in at 2nd place). We use them with Thirsties covers and have found this combo to be bulletproof. Not a single leak and contains poo crazy well, never gets on the cover!
