Trying to decide about induction

Yesterday at my OBGYN appointment my doctor suggested that I get induced this up coming Monday. I will be 39 weeks. I have GD and I am in severe pain. The baby is in the 90th percentile as well. My husband is thrilled, the doula says I'm a great candidate, and my mom who hates most of my disisions thinks it's a great idea. I have plenary of time to cancel if I want.

I planed on laboring at home with my doula then going in to the hospital later. I am terrified of needles and not sure I can walk in fine and get my iv. Also I am starting to panic in general. Any advice would be great. Anyone who has been induced, does it suck? Thanks for any help!

Re: Trying to decide about induction

  • I was induced, but as a FTM I have nothing to compare it to. Did the contractions hurt? Yes, but again I have nothing to compare it to. I started pitocin at 8am and LO was born at 9:12pm.

I would suck it up another week.

  • I was induced this time. It was the best decision. I got an Epi and was incredibly relaxed throughout the whole thing.
But disclaimer: I'm a STM with a history of quick labors and didn't need pitocin.

Best of luck with your decision.

  • I had a great experience being induced. Went in at midnight and started cytotec. Dr broke my water around 830 am and had him at 152 pm. Never had to have pit so can't say how those contractions were. Mine were painful after he broke my water but got an epi and it overall was a great experience. I am also FTM with nothing to compare to but if my dr wanted to induce me again next time (for a good reason) I would totally be okay with it. Good luck!
  • Great experience as well and I was a FTM induced at 38 for high blood pressure. They did cervadil the night before, started pitocin at 9, broke my water at 11:15, epidural at 12:30. The baby was born at 7:45 that night after 45 mins of pushing. Are you planning on an epidural? I will say that the contractions after they broke my water were really intense. The pitocin really affected me and I was very happy when the anesthesiologist arrived!

Good luck with your decision, whatever happens! I hope you have a wonderful birth!
  • Thank you everyone! I am planing on the epi but I am feeling braver than when I started the thread. Thank you again!
  • We just made the decision to do it. I am 41 + 2 and am completely closed up. He is still high up so I am not a favorable candidate for a sweep or any other natural remedies. VERY unlikely this baby is coming on his own anytime soon. I just added a fe hours to my labor playlist and downloaded another movie. We head in tonight to start the cytotec and will see where we are tmrw.

Good luck! All roads lead to baby now so just go with your gut. Everyone's story is different.
  • I was induced. I am glad I didn't wait for my baby's health (he has a heart condition that would've worsened) but if I were to do it again, I would wait. I didn't like the pitocin. I'm not gonna lie, it hurt. My epidural didn't work. But I dilated from 4-10 in an hour and was ready to push. It went so quickly that it didn't really matter how much pain I was in. I have learned that everyone is completely different. Both my SILs were induced and we all three had totally different experiences. Although 2 of us ended in CS. I would wait but only if your dr says that's safe with the GD.
  • My doctor says I am a great candidate because I am already 3 cm and 75%. I am not sure how much that matters. I am feeling more and more like I can do this. I may really go for the induction on Monday... Weird.
  • I asked for the advice. It's fine negative or positive I wanted the input.

    Wow really?! How helpful.
I would, and have.  It's always best for baby to choose their own birth date if possible.

  • Have you spoken with your doula about more natural methods of induction? You might look at other options before you go for meds, just as a "give it a shot" kind of thing. I was induced with both of my children and it worked out fine, but it was more painful, I ended up with an epi, etc. While that's not a big deal or anything, it would've been nice for the kiddos to "pick" their own birthday - and maybe less painful and restrictive.
  • I was induced and had my water broken...pretty much at the same time and tried to hold out as much as possible but contractions hit me like a train and I had back labor. Once I got the epidural i had no pain just pressure so after many hours (16) my doc said that she wasn't moving down thru my pelvis and that she was big for me. He told me that at 8:30pm and she was here at 9:01..I'll admit I knew it was very possible that induction could very well lead to csection but I rly thought it wasn't going to happen to me. It happened very fast so it was rly overwhelming and scary but the moment I heard her cry none of that mattered to me. I know that a lot of ppl would be disappointed with that kind of a situation but having a beautiful healthy baby was worth all of it. And I most likely would've ended up with a csection if I wasnt induced because she just would've gotten bigger and that was the issue in the end. Also when my water wS broken there was meconium in it so I'm not sure if it would've been ok that she was in there thT long with that stuff. When it comes down to it, if ur okay with possible epidurL and csection then ok, because there's a much higher chance of that with induction. If not then I do not suggest it. Sorry for the ramble but I hope this helped! Sry for all the typos I have a baby on my chest and I'm on my phone lol
  • I was induced at 39.2 days. Was super nervous about it and the pitocin. Got to the hospital at 7am. Started slow drip of pitocin around 8 am. I was already 3 cm and 80% when I got to the hospital. My dr broke my water around 9 am. Got an epidural twice: at 10 am and 2:30 pm. They were AMAZING!!! couldnt feel one contraction!! Was totally fine, then around 3:50 started really feeling the contractions. My dr came around 4:20 and I really needed to push. It felt like a HUGE bowel movement. She was born at 5:02 pm. It really hurt, but I'm so glad i kept the decision to induce. I was totally prepared for the day and could ease into the contractions instead of coming to the hospital already in pain.
  • I had a great experience being induced due to low amniotic fluids. I had cervadil for 12 hours then my water was broken. Got an epidural at 2:30 and baby was born at 6:43. Things progresses fast and I only has to push for 40 minutes. Good luck!

---- It's actually not ALWAYS best. Everyone's medical needs, complications and histories are different. There are a variety of reasons when it is actually best for baby to be induced. And that is an individual conversation a mother needs to have with her doctor.
    Hence the "if possible."  ;)
