Has anyone used IV narcotics for pain meds?

First of all, congrats to all of you lovely ladies who have had your little squishes already!

Did any of you (or STM's) use the IV narcotics for pain control? What was your experience like? How much did it actually help to dull your pain? Did you get an epidural later on, or wish that you would have?

I wrote in my birth plan that I want to try the IV meds first and see how it goes because I really don't want to have to be confined to the bed, and don't want my labor to possibly slow/stall due to an epidural. BUT, I keep having second thoughts and feel like I should just suck it up and go with an epidural in the first place. Ultimately, I probably won't know until I'm in the situation anyway, but I'm just curious what your experience has been like! :)

Re: Has anyone used IV narcotics for pain meds?

  • I did. They made me feel a little drunk but only lasted for maybe 15 minutes. They took the edge off of the contractions while I waited for my epidural. (I was induced and on Pitocin.)

  • I just had this with my delivery. They used this till I had dilated past 4 cm. I gave the edge off. I was still having strong contractions and could feel all of it but helped me rest and be more calm in between contractions.

  • I remember getting a shot of something, can't remember what it was, but it made me a little out of it.  Like I could still feel the pain but I couldn't really react to it?  It was weird.  I will not have anything like that again; if I need meds I'm going straight for the epidural.

I had nubain with my first while I was waiting for an epidural.  It didn't help at all, but I think I was too far gone at that point between the pit and back labor.   I have heard other people say that it doesn't really help the pain as much as make you just not care about the pain.

  • I had 2 doses of Dilaudid and it helped me get the rest I needed.
