Good Q's for Ped?

My DH really wants to interview the Ped but I have no idea what questions to ask. This practice comes highly recommended from our in area physician friends so I just figured we let the hosp know and that be it... Is it worth it to interview? What should we ask?
Thank you!!

Re: Good Q's for Ped?

  • After office hours procedures?  Do they send you to a children's emergency room? or does the dr. message service forward your call in the middle of the night?

If you can't see the one Dr. you like in the practice cause he or she is on vacation who will step in their place?  Do you like that Dr.?

What is their stance on vaccination schedule?  Do they have strong philosophy on child rearing?  Do they line up with what your views are?

When I interviewed Peds, it only took 15 or so minutes meeting with each Dr.  But to me it was nice to meet them ahead of time and get to see their mannerisms and thoughts on how they run their practice.  But then I didn't have one come HIGHLY recommended like you.  Out of the three I narrowed down to interview I totally connected with my first candidate.

  • You definitely want to interview. It takes 15 minutes. H and I went to see two practices and feel really good after having meeting with the group we chose. The bump has a recommended list check it out!
  • I did not think this was necessary to interview.  The most important thing to me was that it was
    1. A large group so even if I couldn't get into my Dr. I could get LO seen on short notice.
    2. Convenient location
    3. After hours clinic on site.

  • Thank you ladies! I don't want to come off as a dumb FTM but its nice to know your experience if you've already been through it. I didn't really think the interview was important but it sounds like the benefit besides the simple Q's is seeing the space and getting a good feel for the practice. Our Hosp requires your Ped to check the baby before you are discharged so I wouldn't get the chance to really meet them if we didn't interview. I think we should now interview more than one just in case.

    Thank you!

  • Not sure if it pertains to you, but the Ped I interviewed had admitting privileges to certain hospitals.  So if you need a Ped to check out your LO before discharging him or her, you want to make sure the Ped can actually do it there.
  • We interviewed our first pedi and when we had DD's first appointment we decided we didn't like the practice and switched. We love our new pedi.

So I guess I'm saying, interviewing is fine, but don't be afraid to jump ship of you end up not liking it. We ended up not liking the office staff and scheduling routine appointments (for a newborn!) was difficult.

  • If you are BFing do they have an IBCLC? Do they use the WHO charts for breastfed babies? Both are super important for my family. If you're having a boy & not circumcising do they know what to do/not do?

I picked my DS's pediatricians office due to the location and they have awesome after hours. My friends also kept raving about one particular doctor so I listened to them. For the first 9 months things where perfect. Then my DS became sick. He wasn't eating, was loosing weight and had diarrhea for over the course of a month. Every time I tried to book a sick appointment with the doctor she was always at full capacity. I started seeing a nurse practitioner that took an interest in my son's health and asked for me to bring him 2x a week to monitor him for a few weeks. We continued doing this even after he got better. I then decided to make the nurse practitioner DS's primary physician.

My recommendation is to pick someone who will be there for you and your child when you need them the most.

You can just have one of the ones at the hospital do this if yours doesn't have privileges, it's not a big deal. That is what we are doing.

I just went with a pedi that was highly recommended, no interview. I figured if I didn't like him it was not hard to switch. Its not like you are making a lifetime commitment to them! :)

In our case it totally worked out, the pedi is wonderful and I love him. I've also ended up seeing other docs in the same practice and so far they are all great.
