Tmi overload: post birth bowel movement

This is a big over share but figured I'd throw it out there anyway since my dr office is closed so I can't get the nurse's opinion until tomorrow. How long after giving birth before you had a bowel movement? I'm going on day 5 with nothing and have been religiously taking colace. I hadn't really given it a thought until this morning when I realized that it's been quite a while. Not really looking forward to this event but I guess it's gotta happen at some point!

  • Like PPs said, mine took about 3 days, but my nurses said it could take up to 5-7. I second the fruit thing :)

  • I drank the hell out of some apple juice, pretty much every meal while in the hospital and on day 4 I still hadn't had one so I took the nurse up on her offer for a suppository. It was just the generic dulcolax suppository you can buy at any drug store. I had an amazing BM within 5 minutes.
  • I had one BM the day after my cs, then nothing for 3 days. I'm taking colace but it's certainly not softening anything up :( I was so regular during pregnancy!
  • Oh man, I didn't even think about this :( Hope you get relief soon and thanks for the heads up of this being a thing!
  • I'm going through this currently too. Only on day 2 though and it is starting to get pretty annoying. Been drinking tons of water and apple juice, eating fruit, and taking Colace. Hoping something happens soon.

  • 4 days, and man did it hurt

  • It took 5 days and, surprisingly, didn't hurt.

  • I was required to have one before leaving the hospital. So next day for me. I seriously thought they were going to OD me on stool softeners the way they were pushing them.
  • I must be the oddball here, because I remember after having DD and being taken to my recovery room, I took the biggest sh*t of my life.  I was too exhausted to be ashamed (the nurse had to help me onto the toilet, wipe, help me stand up and pull my pants on because I was so weak).  So that was that, LOL.  I hope for another good pooping experience this time around, minus the exhaustion ;)

  • I had a c/s so I didn't get to clear things out. I figure I will call tomorrow to check with the nurse but it sounds like it's all over the board in terms of what is 'normal.'

  • Had a c/s and didn't poop until about day 5. The nurses and dr were more concerned with if I was passing gas. Dr said it could be a few days but I should keep up on the stool softeners and try milk of magnesia to help things along if I wanted.

  • I did at the hospital so 2 days. I was expecting it to be way worse with the stitches and the hemorrhoids. It wasn't bad at all.

  • @Laura8388‌ yes! I was so embarrassed! I don't fart in front of dh but it was non stop. I eventually just said it was surgically induced and it didn't give him the ok to fart around me!
  • I think it was 4-5 days. My dr told me to take 2 Tbs. milk of magnesia. I had a bowel movement a couple hours later ;)
  • @ Laura8388 I think this is the best thing I have ever read on TB:

'But there was so much farts!'

    Lol
  • Natural calm, which is a magnesium citrate/carbonate drink mix, can help with having a bm post baby.

Hahaha, I don't normally fart in front of DH either, but pregnancy has ruined that :)

  • I had one at 2 days while still in the hospital. It wasn't painful even with s 2nd degree tear and stitches. However, (TMI ahead) it did cause a couple large clots to come out. I am assuming from using those muscles to push things out. Just a warning. :)

  • Well a plus to having an ileostomy ( a poop bag) I don't have as colon .. So 1) no pooping in labor and 2) no worries of pooping afterwords... It comes out my small intestines when it wants / down side it farts and I have no control this should be musical
  • I went the next day and have gone daily since having him.

They said as long as I could pass gas in the hospital I was good to go home 24 hrs after delivery.

  • Mine was 6 days after birth. I took colace every day, and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting.

  • @BethRN1987‌ I just freaken' belly laughed!!! My friends warned me about losing control of your bladder and I had no idea. Thank goodness the big hosp pads catch that too.

Mine was the next day. My TMI was that when I labored at home for so long I bet I had literally 5-7 BMs a day and they were SO painful because of how low he was. I would be on toilet crying. I heard they were painful after so I was nervous but that was nothing compared to mine before.

  • I'm curious what your doctor has to say because to me 5 days doesn't seem totally abnormal. The nurse at the hospital just told me today that your digestive system sort of shuts down during delivery and takes 3-4 days to restart. I'm thinking 5 doesn't sound weird because I'm so irregular anyway. I had so much flipping diarrhea prior to delivering that I don't see myself pooping again for several days either.
Keep drinking plenty of water and taking your stool softener. I promise post-delivery pooping isn't nearly as painful at you imagine!
