Scaley, rough, very dry skin

My LO is 5 weeks old and has pretty bad baby acne. It gets worse then better then worse again. He's now getting cradle cap and it's just so dry and flaky. His face is sooooo dry and rough feeling and almost feels scaley. Has anyone experienced this and know what I can do to help it? My mom just keeps saying to leave it and it will go away but it just looks so painful for him!

Re: Scaley, rough, very dry skin

  • My LO ended up getting everything you described when he was around 4 weeks old.  After doing some research and talking to the pediatrician, we figured out the scaly stuff on his face was eczema, which according to the pedi, signaled that he had a sensitivity to some food.  The pedi said he had MSPI, so since I BF, I cut out dairy and soy.  I have also had to cut out nuts, pineapple, coconut and eggs since he has had flare ups when I've had these things.  It did take a few days for the eczema, acne and cradle cap to go away after cutting everything out but it has stayed away unless I have something that has one of these things without realizing it.

  • Oh man...I BF too. Is it most often a sensitivity to dairy and soy (and the other stuff) or how do you even know what to cut out? Even the eczema went away without ointment or anything?
  • Call your pediatrician.

I initially did try an oatmeal based lotion and aquaphor. The oatmeal lotion did nothing, the aquaphor helped a little. My pedi suggested cutting out the major allergens which I did. He said they are dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, wheat, and shellfish. I cut all of that out and the eczema was gone in about 2 weeks. After another 2 weeks, I added back in wheat, which he was fine with. I also tried shellfish and he is fine with that too. With the other things, he would get fussy after a feeding, spit up more than usual. His spit up would come out of his nose along with a ton of mucus. Plus his poop would have mucus in it too. I didn't figure out the pineapple and coconut sensitivity until last week when I had them a few days apart and his acne and cradle cap came back along with the fussiness, tons of spit up and mucus.
  • Coconut oil is the best thing for the dry skin and walmart sells cradle cap lotions, it comes with a little comb that really helps get rid of the flaky skin. That's what works best for my (almost) 2 month old daughter.
  • Olive oil! Works brilliant! X
  • With my DS our pedi recommended aquaphor and using just Dove sensitive bar soap instead of baby soap. Also Olive oil.
  • I use aquaphor and it cleared it up in a day!
  • Mustella products! I will forever SWEAR by them! The shampoo for cradle cap literally had a pretty bad case cleared up in 2 days and has not returned.. And the face wash for eczema prone skin cleared up the baby acne (literally the worst case ever... I could not even find a picture online of a worse case and that is pretty hard) in a week or so. He still will have a spot or two show up but you would not believe how clear it is. MUSTELLA!!
