Update: Should I get my membranes stripped today? (40w2d pregnant)

I know the membrane scraping topic has been talked about so much on here. I have done my research on it and talked to my Dr. She offered to do it on Thursday.. and I opted out. I had said if I went the whole weekend with no labor then I would do it on Monday. Well it is Monday and I have to make the decision. I have heard both good and bad reviews from friends who have had it done. I was just curious as to what you all suggest. My appointment is in an hour and I am still undecided.

So I didn't have to make the decision after all.. my Dr just did it while she was checking my cervix. Which was actually better because then I didn't have to worry about it hurting. It was all done in about 30 seconds. It hurt a little bit while she was doing it. It has been about a half hour since she did it an I am not in any kind of pain or major cramping. We will just see if it works. She said "We will see you Thursday and talk about scheduling and induction".

:-w the waiting game continues.....

  • Eh I got mine stripped at 40w 3d. I'm now 41w 1d soooo you see how well it worked for me. I'd get my membranes stripped again in an effort to avoid medical induction, though, which is why we did it in the first place.

  • Just thought I'd add that my OB and midwife don't let their patients go past 41w2-3d, which is why we chose to do it. I'm all for doing things as naturally as possible but we're def under a time crunch. Unfortunately I'll be going in tonight or tomorrow to start medical induction. Boo.

  • Unrelated to OP, but @theluckiest9 could they do the catheter bulb induction? If you're looking to avoid medication that might be an option. FTM-so this is just based off my research, but there's an induction method where they insert a catheter and inflate the balloon inside your cervix to mechanically open it to 5 cm putting you into active labor vs cervidil/pit/cytotec/etc.
  • @MEjack1‌ I actually hadn't brought up the foley bulb with my midwife. I have an appointment this afternoon and will ask. Thanks for the reminder!

  • I am 41, 1 day and have to make the same decision. I want to avoid medical intervention as much as possible and I like the idea of catheter bulb induction. Not sure my dr. is a fan. I hate having to make these decisions. I just want nature to take its course.

So no advice except I feel your pain. Good luck!!

  • Just remember that you won't/can't be pregnant forever. If you're healthy and the baby is healthy, I'd say just wait. Who knows - it might happen on its own tomorrow!
  • Mine caused me to go into labor about 12 hours later! I now have a 4 day old : )

  • But I don't know that I would choose to have it done.  Mine kind of came out of the blue.  I delivered Max a week and a half early.

  • I say do it..but nothing may happen..I got mine done I was 1cm 60-70% and nothing came of it not even spotting..but it did no harm and I am/was GBS+
  • I don't see how far along you are, but if you're overdue and there is talk of a medical induction I'd try the stripping first.  If it's just for the hell of it, I'd say no.

  • I had mine done with my first on my due date and I had him 3 days later. For me it wasn't painful and I think if you are overdue or at least due then you could try.
If I go to my 40w appointment and my doctor thinks it could work then I'll do it again.

  • I had it done several times when I was pregnant with my first...didn't really hurt, but didn't do anything either.

Done again with my second...a bit uncomfortable since my cervix was so far back, and again, didn't induce anything other than some bleeding and cramping.

Just had it done this morning...no discomfort at all, tiny spotting, and so far no cramping/contractions 6 hours later.
  • I'm getting my done at my 39 week apt.  I am trying for a vbac and my doctor will not induce.  Last time I went over my due date so we are trying to avoid that.  I will take any measures to not have to have a c-section! its a tough decision though.  If I wasn't trying to avoid a c-section I would wait until I was overdue but at that point I figure why not.

Did she tell you she was doing it, or you could tell?
I'm curious; how does it work? Does it make your water break easier? Or... What?

It helps cause the release of prostaglandin by separating the amniotic membranes from the cervix.

  • I just don't know how I feel about the OBs who just strip membranes without saying anything... I guess being past due I don't think it's SUCH a big deal... but someone around here said she found out her OB was doing it for weeks before her due date, which really gives me the heebie-jeebies.

  • 40w6d today and had mine done about an hour ago. The NST showed I was having regular contractions, and I could tell, but they didn't hurt. Now I can feel them more after she did it. My doctor wanted to schedule an induction for tonight, but now they might be booked, waiting for them to call back. We'll see if these contractions keep up. Either having one sooner or induced Thursday. Will let you know what I think.

SS.. I think we need the status of your cervix. My office won't do it unless you are a candidate for it (at least 2cm dilated and 50% Effaced). It typically won't do anything unless you are already this far along and there is a possibility of breaking your water by accident, so don't take stripping/sweep lightly.

I had my done less then 24 hour I had my daughter, but I was 5cm and 80% Effaced

  • I just had mine done but I was only a fingertip dilated. Still hoping it will work.
