For MoMs with twins and then a singleton...

I guess i just have a ton of questions! we have 14 month old twins and a singleton (and last!) due in August, so the babies (can I still call them my babies?) will be 19 months old when the new baby arrives.

1. we have a nice double stroller now, but as we live close to the beach i'm hoping to take a lot of walks after the baby is born. do i trade in my double for a triple? and what would our options even be with two toddlers and a newborn? or should we just keep the double and buy a single and use our adapter for the infant seat?

2. i was a super nap nazi with our babies. i felt that rested babies are happy babies. however my mom, along with many others, tell me that things are very different when a newborn comes along with toddlers in the picture. i obviously cannot keep two almost-two-year-olds inside from august to end of october. they will want to be outside, and i want to be more spontaneous. do you just go with the flow? get a moby and wear the baby? i'm feeling a lot of anxiety with the fact that i'm going to have children in different stages. i think twins are sometimes "easier" just because they're usually at the same developmental stages whereas this is a huge curveball. thanks for any advice and support!

Re: For MoMs with twins and then a singleton...

  • I think you're right on track for thinking about baby wearing. I had singletons first, then my twins, so I was opposite with the scheduling. I only knew "one demand" and failed at schedules.
It's going to be lot of just trouble shooting once the baby is here. My dd1 wouldn't nap in a stroller and was difficult to put down. But ds would sleep any where. I still can throw him in a stroller and go to the park and have him take his regular nap there. Your newborn could go either way.
As for the stroller, look into adding a boogy board to it. The twin who's more active can ride, one can sit and baby can be in the stroller.
    Good luck and congrats!

I am watching this post as my singleton should arrive when my twins are 25 months old.  I don't know anyone who has been in my situation (3 kids aged 2 and under) so I know I am going to have to wing it.  And probably earn all the raised eyebrows I've gotten recently.  Anyway, I didn't babywear with the twins, I didn't really like it and it just didn't work for me, but this time I know I'll have to get over it.  My plan is to buy a stroller that is like a double sit and stand.  I found it on my employer's Craigslist type of site.  My kids are good about holding my hands while we walk in a parking lot etc., but I think I need to have something to corral all 3 kids together.  Still my hope is that I can babywear the singleton, and hold hands with the twins and wear my backpack diaper bag.  It'll be a sight.

  • @rn8 I had 4 under 4. I always see people counting my kids. I just say things like "I've got my own parade coming through!"
  • If you can master baby wearing, I'd highly recommend it. I would maybe look into a single snap n go style stroller for your infant car seat if you think you still need some type of stroller in the beginning and you have a mommy's helper or spouse that can go out with you. Thankfully my 13 year old comes in very handy for this since I suck at baby wearing.

I plan to do most of my shopping at Target where they have the double seat carts that have a large enough shopping basket to hold the infant carrier down inside (NOT on the cart's single child seat, of course). I haven't attempted this in reality yet since I haven't taken little guy anywhere but the pediatrician's office since his NICU release.

My twins have basically quit taking scheduled naps. One of them has never been a good napper, ever. If I can get the baby settled after one of his feedings, I try and encourage the girls to lie down with their blankies and set the mood. Occasionally, I get results. Usually, it turns into a house party as soon as I shut their door behind me. Seriously. I've had to remove all furniture from their room, other than their cribs, and put a slide lock on their closet door so they don't break into it and pull everything out of it onto the floor.

It's a crazy train here, but I'm loving it. and CONGRATS!

  • I have #3 due in September and I plan to do a lot more baby wearing this time. The twins are usually pretty good with nap time and I hope they are just as good once baby gets here (they will be almost 2). I have no idea what I am going to do about the stroller situation yet. I have a joovy scooter x2 for the twins and I still have my double sit and stand from when they were still in the infant carseats. I didn't really use it too too often so I'm not sure if I should invest in a single stroller or not.

  • I think it depends on the baby. my 16 mo old DD is a scheduled baby and I hope to keep it that way. I think we'll be inside a lot as the triplets are due in 3.5 weeks (yes, 4 under 17 or 18 mos. . Not sure when they're coming).
As for the stroller, you could invest in a triple and keep the double for when someone just takes the twins...

  • My twins were 29 months old when #3 arrived in December.  We just got a snap-n-go for when we go out and put the twins in the shopping cart.  If I am by myself with all three, I wear the baby.  When baby is too big to wear comfortably, I'm planning on putting him in a single stroller.  My twins haven't used our double stroller since they were 18-20 months old.  I pull a wagon when we go for walks and half the time they want to walk anyways.

We took baby for his first outing after 2 weeks in his carseat.  We kept him covered up so no one bothered him and he just rolled with it.  I've been lucky in that he's a great sleeper in his carseat though.
    Good luck!
