breast pump question

My LO is almost a week old and I didnt think i was going to be able to breast feed bc I wasnt producing milk and when he latches on, afterwards I didnt see anything on my nipple. I still had  him latch on to do the sucking in hopes of milk coming in and also give him formula. Well much to my surprise, I woke up this morning with 2 SORE engorged boobs...woo hoo. So now I go to try and use the pump I have, but its not pumping anything out (which I think I have bc of the soreness and when I massage and squeeze the nipple with my hand, milk def comes out). Now here's my question: could my flanges be too small and not let me pump correctly?  I am a FTM and have no clue whats "correct sizing". I am just using the 25 mm reg ones that came with my pump, but I have XL breast. I wear a 36DD. I feel like the pump (ameda purely yours-sent to me by insurance) isnt pumping  hard enough as well. Do you think getting a bigger flange will make a difference??

Re: breast pump question

  • I would try using a different flange.  However, I have the same pump and it sucks!  Ha, no pun intended! It worked great the first 2 weeks and after that, it has slowly died.  The suction only sucks at low.  Even if I move the notch all the way, the suction power doesn't change.  It did in the beginning, but like I said...its slowly dying.  I'm guessing that's why it was free.

  • It is not recommended to pump this early on if you are also nursing. The engorgement is uncomfortable, but it will only last a couple days. If you pump and nurse, you are telling your body to make more milk than your baby needs, which will lead to an oversupply. Try your pump again in a couple weeks, and if needed, try different flanges.
