Numbers/ Alphabet

Does your LO know their numbers or alphabet? We are working on numbers along with a few letters here or there. He is more interested in the numbers. I talk to him about the letters but he seems to care less. I know they are working on it at his daycare some but when is the age that they should be able to recognize all of their letters?

Alex knows all letters and numbers up to about 40. He can't say all of them (he's a bit behind in the language stuff and just now starting to really talk a lot more), but we have a big puzzle and he always brings the correct one when I ask him for a number/letter. He has always had a great memory, it's really pretty amazing. He is into maps right now and knows all 50 states, lots of the capitols and things like where the different oceans are etc. I think he must have gotten this from DH, who also picks up new things very quickly.

But as I said, DS is behind in language and just now getting a bit more social etc. I guess the strengths and weaknesses are starting to show?

Yes she knows all letters- says ABCs and can recognize them all. She can count to 20 but cannot recognize all of the numbers yet.

Well I feel behind! He'll count or sing Abcs but haven't really worked on identifying the individual letters and numbers. I'll have to ask about it tomorrow, sometimes I'll find he knows something I didn't realiZe daycare was working on.

DS1 know a lot of his letters and numbers. He enjoys counting, but often skips over numbers or gets them out of order sometimes. (He'll put himself in "time out" sometimes by sitting by himself and counting. It's really funny) Same with letters. He'll sing the ABC song, but skip over things or mash letters together. He has a Melissa and Doug alphabet puzzle and will say "A is for apple" or "Z is for zipper", etc, when he puts the pieces in place. He is really good with his colors, though.

She can count to 10 and identify all those numbers. She can identify most letters - we have magnetic letters on our fridge and if I ask her to find a letter she can usually find it. But she doesn't know the whole ABC song. She'll start it, but then she just stops singing after about F. I think DD1 could sing the whole thing before she was 2. I'm not concerned about it or anything - especially since she can identify letters - I just find it a bit odd.

DS1 is definitely not as far with letter and numbers as some people have mentioned, he knows numbers up to ten, and a few teens and gets some in the right order, but cannot count to ten straight through, same with letters, he knows some and sings parts of the ABC song, but not the whole way through, he had delayed speech and is catching up fast, but is not there yet.

Currently we are working on colours, he is getting about one a week, we have been working on numbers too, but not as much, letters are more just a play thing for now. A teacher once told me that teaching letters and numbers is easier for the teachers than life skills, so I am not too worried.

I might look into getting a puzzle though as he loves puzzles and we don't have any letter or number ones, and this would probably help.
