My daughter was home for the first time last night and all she did was nurse all night long... Didn't actually stAy asleep more than 30 min until 6 am! She took tiny naps in between and everytime I'd put her down she'd wake up and cry and the only thing that soothed her was nursing. I have the docs for her tomorrow so I'll be addressing this but for other moms is it ok for her to eat that much? And now she's starting up again I've been nursing since 530 6 ish. Is this cluster feeding? Any insight would be awesome

That happened with my daughter when she came home from the hospital. Even though she was attached to me for long periods of time she wasnt always eating. a lot of it was comfort nursing. Kelly Mom has some great info. Good luck! https://kellymom.com/bf/normal/growth-spurts/

I may need to start a new thread but I have a similar question. In the nicu they told us that babies typically need only 10 minutes on each side, but DS has been eating for MUCH longer. Toward the end he does stop and start and then I unlatch him. I would say for the time he is latched on he's probably actively eating 75% of the time. Earlier today he ate for 25 minutes on one side and 18 minutes on the other, and then was still rooting! He has a great latch and I'm watching his throat to check for swallowing. Is this normal? Are his breaks normal?

@avigailandcharlie‌ We got told in the NICU that after 30 minutes they are burning more calories trying to eat than what they are gaining. I'm unsure when that isn't the case. I was EPing and am trying to breastfeed every other time but I'm running into similar issues. Both of the twins continue to root after eating for 30+ minutes and they seem to eat more frequently than with bottles.

I had this issue the first night too. I ended up pumping to see how much milk was coming outsin e it had just arrived. I ended up not having alot so I did supplement feed with a combination a supplement formula and my breast milk. I think this helped satisfy him till my milk really came in. I pump to see how much milk I really am producing and that helps me see how much he is really taking in to be full.

I remember DS nursing for seven hours once...he wouldn't let me off the couch. I brought it up with my doc who said, "Oh no, that's too much. Just feed him every 2-3 hours." LMAO Easy for the doc to say, not so easy to do if baby wants more! I just let him eat when he wanted, and he established a more reasonable schedule around 1.5-2 months old. And as pp have said, it helps to jack up your supply, so I say let them go to town. They're still so little, trying to 'schedule' them seemed so silly to me at the time...even though it's exhausting.

Baby is probably comfort feeding. I had the same thing the first few days. We decided to introduce a pacifier. It hasn't interfered with nursing and allows her to soothe and sleep in between feedings.

What type of paci are you using? Any other bf moms using pacis? I'm so nervous to introduce one, but wouldn't mind to at some point.

I introduced a paci when I realized he was no longer hungry and just comfort nursing. I have used two brands and he takes them when he's not hungry and just wants to suck and he spits it out when he's done. I have used and he has accepted both the MAM and Advent 0+ month brands.

We did the same with the paci and its helped a lot, especially in the middle of the night when she wants to comfort nurse. We introduced it about 1 week- she only gets in when she needs it for comfort. We have mam and nuk pacis that she likes.

I had to give a paci even though I was really against it. Either I was going to kill myself feeding or try and sleep somehow. We gave him a paci but he rarely takes it and thankfully hasn't caused nipple confusion.

The 'soothie' pacifiers in the link above are very similar to the style the twins (and DS1) got in the NICU, so that's what we're using. No problems with them and feeding!

We're using one as a soother when he's crying just because he has gas/is pooping. So he has it maaaybe a total of 5-10mins per day if he's really fussy from gas. We use one of these and it hasn't interfered with nursing (for us).

This is exactly what we are doing. She mainly gets it at night when she is in between feedings and just cranky.

Very normal! DS was on the breast over 20 times in a 24 hour period the first few days home. A newborn's stomach is super small and breastmilk is very easily digested. As long as the diapers are adequate, try and trust your body and your baby. It's hard, but it does get better.

Thanks for all of the responses! Went to docs today and all is very well! She's getting plenty of milk which was shown in her weight she's juSt a hungry girl! And mine used a paci at the hospital but doesn't rly even need it anymore since milk has come in and the nursery nurSe said it's perfectly find to give a paci
