WIC ?

So can anyone tell me what WIC really is? A debit card you can only use on food like SNAP? Bags of groceries you pick up each week? I have appt next week...

Re: WIC ?

  • It's a card that allows you to buy only certain items. You'll get a "shopping list" that explains everything. With SNAP you can buy any food item, but WIC has pre-approved brands. The only exception is they provide $10 to go towards produce, without too much specification (just nothing pre-sliced like fruit or veggie trays).

I mostly use mine to buy produce since they allow organic, and sometimes tuna. I try to buy organic or closest to it for everything, and unfortunately most of that stuff is not WIC approved.

Thanks gals. I didn't want to have to go on assistance but groceries are the one thing I really don't have $ for once all the billa are paid.

Does anyone know if it will work outside my state? Like when I go to FL for a few weeks. I know back in the day when I had SNAP for a bit, that card did.

And I will ask them all this stuff too but I think I remember one of you guys saying they can't take away some of your child support to repay the WIC right? Lord knows if/when I will ever even get CS.

  • You don't have to pay WIC back nor does your BD.  It's a seperate agency that the one that handles medicaid, food stamps, etc.  However, I think if you have medicaid you automatically qualify for WIC.  I might have that backwards.

With WIC you can buy milk, formula, juice, bread, cereal, pnut butter, etc.  You may not get all of that.  After DD was born we all that but at a certain age they changed it to baby food, infant cereal, and formula.  They also weigh and measure your baby and make sure they are getting their shots and well baby visits.

Yeah I'm guessing after our first visit, we won't be getting WIC anymore because of the shots thing. Not vaccing. I saw that online when I was reading their website so whatever. It said they will "certify" us for 6 months so IDK if we will have to check in with them or if we're good for 6 months of benefits. Whatever. Something is better than nothing.
