I know this has been asked but, baby wearers-suggest your favorite sling

I've been searching andi. Really want to have one here before baby arrives. I found some on etsy for under $30 which is ideal for me, but is that taking a chance? Can you suggest some that you use or have used or heard of being good? I love the way the rig slings look but I have no idea how to use one. But either ring sling or a sash works for me! I would like to keep it under $30 also. Thank you

  • There are loads of YouTube videos and tutorials to learn how. I'd suggest searching our past threads because some ladies have offered some really great RS and carrier suggestions.

  • Alright thank you :). I'll just do a search to save people from repeating themselves!

  • I LOVED my Moby Wrap for when DS was a newborn. But as they get heaver, the stretchy material is a little harder to work with.
I'm actually going to attempt at making my own version of a ring sling. They retail for about $75 brand new and before I justify spending that type of money- I wanna give it a whirl (which will cost me all of $10 and 45 minutes of time).
  • I tried to convince my mom to make me one since she has the sewing machine. If I could figure it out I would be one happy lady but sewing by hand would take way to long

  • I buy ALOT on Etsy but I don't know if I would buy a sling.  Babies are not super secure in them and have suffocated in the past.  Also, the difference between a cheap sling and a good sling for your comfort is astronomical.

I have a Hotsling.  It was a good 0-4 item for quick house stuff when she just wanted to be held.  After that we did a little K'tan but were pretty strictly Ergo.
I went to find a picture to post but I fear the amount of boob in the only one I could find would have made this post NSFW. @-)

  • Also, you can get an inexpensive soft wrap like a K'tan here in your price range.  I believe they have a coupon code for 10% off for 1st timers.

  • I would be a little nervous with a cheaper sling. Unfortunately you get what you pay for. Have you tried finding a local baby wearing group near you? I belong to a local FB group where people list used slings & carriers for sale (or you can post in search of one). It still may not end up in the $30 range, but still cheaper than what you'd pay new. You could also try some out if they have meet ups to get a feel for them & get help using one. I got a Sleeping Baby sling used through my group & adore it. I've also seen some cheap rebozos for sale that are light & easy like a ring sling.
  • I have a maya wrap I love, I just bought it in a discontinued color for about half of what they normally cost.

  • There are a couple colors of maya slings on amazon for $45 instead of $75 right now.

My suggestion is to look for a local baby wearing group or children's specialty store that may have baby wearing classes. You can bring your baby and try on a bunch of different types of slings, wraps, etc. I bought a moderately priced ring sling after DD was a few months old and just couldn't get into it. Not sure if I got the wrong size or just didn't have it adjusted correctly. I plan to attend a class or group to get a better hands on experience before buying anything this time.

edit to add: I really loved my K'Tan for the newborn stage. very secure, snuggly and user friendly :-)

I've been reading online the most popular brands of 2013 and you hit all 3 on the nose. I have a friend sending me her seven slings so I'm going to have a fee to play with. Thanks for the suggestions!

I have tried to find a local baby wearing club on Facebook but the one my friend suggested won't show up in my search. It could just be because I'm mobile too. So I Will stay away from cheap.. I just want something that I can carry her around in while I'm cleaning or doing whatever and I have feared her suffocating in a cheaper one

  • To me it makes a lot more sense if you're on a limited budget to buy a ring sling instead of a ktan or moby... you can use it way longer.  I still use a ring sling all the time with DD, and started using it when she was tiny.  You can get a basic ring sling here for $40, and you'll be able to use it so much longer than a ktan or moby.

OK that's what my thought was. My friends 2 year old hangs on her back with a ring sling. I figured the baby will grow out of a regular sash sling but it seems easier to use imo.

  • I would just be cautious about the hips...apparently there is some new research out about slings, carriers, and hip problems https://hipdysplasia.org/developmental-dysplasia-of-the-hip/prevention/baby-carriers-seats-and-other-equipment/
I am getting the Ergo, it had received great reviews and has passed pediatric chiropractic approval.

Moby for $28.99. Look online for a coupon code for 10% off your first order.

I thought they were ideal to use for better hip development? Or are you talking about specific ones?

A ring sling absolutely can be used to carry a baby in a position that is fine for hip development (same position as an ergo once baby is big enough).  And you can use it earlier without an infant insert.
The K'tan will also carry a baby in the proper position, it just has to be put on the right way. Similar with the wraps and slings, they can be folded to hold the baby in the recommended position. You just have to be careful to do it correctly.

  • I'm planning on getting a moby wrap/carrier spawn. I have read reviews that it is great for newborns and up. Also less than $30.

  • I am not sure which ones they were specifically talking about besides the baby bjorn...apparently it was on the no list...I had no idea.... There are some helpful diagrams in the link i posted...it shows how you can modify to make most slings etc safe
  • I have a diagram on Pinterest that is very helpful as well. Thanks I'll look at your link now.

  • Here is the one I was really looking for https://wellnessmama.com/12549/steps-to-help-avoid-hip-dysplasia-in-babies/ she recommends several... I know the moby was on there along with the ergo
