My work is boring as hell

I know this is going to sound like a dream job to some, but I"m bored out ofmy mind.  I found out that I was pregnant about a month after starting my new job. They have been great... But my job is so medial and boring that it doesn't matter if I"m at work or not.  I"m unsatisfied with my job but I can't quit because of the money, they are flexible about working from home and dr. apts and things (mostly because no one even notices if I leave early or not) so it's ideal but just unsatisfying.  Any suggestions? I've already talked to my boss and I go to training in a month so I'm hoping to get more projects and such after that.  When I call my boss for a new project he keeps telling me that it's a test to see if I can work on my own. I don't need him to hold my hand but some direction would be nice.

    Um.... it's a TEST?  Well, you need work in the first place in order to work on your own, don't you?  WTH? 

    That tells me that he's got nothing for you but instead of admitting to that, he's spinning it like he's actually "doing something".

    When you started did you discuss job responsibilities/scope of work?, yearly objectives/goals? If you have an idea what the end game is he could very well be testing you to determine if you can establish/determine what tasks need to be taken to reach the desired results/goal he laid out, and work to get them completed.  

    I know in my job we are given direction on 3-5 goals/objectives to complete each year and it's up to us to determine what tasks need to be completed, how they get completed, and on what timeline they are done.

    In your situation, I'd start listening to podcasts and free lectures on iTunes U to exercise your mind a bit while you're waiting for more work to come down the pike.

    I completely agree with this.  Not sure what level you are (manager, entry-level, mid-level, etc), but that would make a big difference in expectations.  And if they hired you thinking you would be a self-starter and would know what projects/goals needed to be accomplished.  I would think only being there for 1 month they would have given you SOME direction.  But again, depends on the type of work you are doing, whether this was discussed during the interview or initial training, and the level you are at.
