Iron supplement recommendations?

Hello Ladies,

My doctor recommended I take an iron supplement along with my prenatal vitamin. I had huge issues with prematal vitamins and finally found one that worked for my stomach, Prenatal One Just 1 Once by Rainbow Light (highly recommend it).

Do any of you have to take an iron supplement that you recommend? I need something that is ideally, "gentle on the stomach."

Thank you :)

Re: Iron supplement recommendations?

  • I take the walmart brand 45mg slow release. It's gentle on your stomach and a lot cheaper than regular brands. It does make me a little constipated at times still but it doesn't make me sick. Good luck!

  • With my previous pregnancy the doctor prescribed the iron supplements. Can you ask your doctor to recommended some?

  • Ferrosequels don't constipate as much

  • I tried taking the gentle kind with stool softener in it and still couldn't stomach it. I made it through 1 week and was miserable. My midwife said that since I'm only slightly anemic that we could try upping my iron intake through food and see how that goes. I feel so much better now. Depending on how low your iron is, maybe this is an option for you?

  • @MK1013 - I'm not sure of the number, she only told me that I was slightly anemic. Here is a link with a list of iron rich foods:

A lot of things are actually fortified with iron (check cereal boxes). I've been eating dried apricots like crazy, they are so good and full of fiber and iron.

  • TMI warning- I did and she said to take the Kaiser permanente over the counter but those made me constipated in the past, so she recommended stool softener! I will do it if I have to but that will be three pills when I hopefully can take only two.
  • I am going to start on one, too, but haven't yet.  Thanks for posting this question.

I love the cereal idea!  I'm not a big meat eater so I am definitely going to look into this.

  • I'm taking Euro-Fer and so far it's been great. I take it with a little bit of food and orange juice, as recommended by my doctor and the pharmacist to avoid stomach issues.

I was super constipated when I was taking a high iron prenatal vitamin in my first trimester, but so far taking Euro-Fer (which is way higher iron) I've been fine. I also eat probiotic yogurt everyday (not with the iron though) and I've found that has really helped keep me regular now.

  • My doctor finally responded to the different options I had asked her about and she said that the Rainbow Light Complete Iron should work for me (I didn't know that Rainbow Light also carried iron pills). She said that given that I only have light anemia I only have to take it 3 times a week. I also asked if changing my diet would be enough (as you ladies suggested) and she said that it wouldn't make too much of a difference because at this point the baby was taking that iron and the supplement would be for me, especially as I am approaching my delivery date.

I like that these are food-based and vegetarian friendly (fyi: got them at whole foods).
  • I take feosol and have had no problems. It's been easy on the stomach and no constipation. Good luck!
  • How many mg are the supplements you all are taking. I bought 28mg thinking they were minimal but then it says high potency
  • Mine is 30mg and my doctor said I should only take it 3 times a week based on my blood test results.
  • Mines slow release 45mg. I couldn't find anything lower than that.
