Calling all vintage fashionistas

So back in the fall, I bought this dress, in a fit of apparent vintage insanity. I'm sure right now, I would look like I was stuffed into sausage casing, but I'm thinking if I can slim down fast enough, it could be cute for Easter (maybe with Spanx underneath, lol). However, I suck at accessorizing. What kind of shoe/jewelry would you put with this? Or feel free to tell me I'm crazy and it looks too costumey to even wear out in public. TIA!

  • I think it's adorable, but it does look like it could cause a bit of a tummy bulge for even a smaller woman. Only you can decide if you're comfortable with the fit, but the dress itself is great. I would go with a skinny black patent belt just like in the pic, with black patent shoes. Kitten heels would be cute.

Shit, this is what I'm afraid of. It came with the skinny belt, so OK, I can be on the lookout for shoes like these.

    Are you going to church?

Nude peep toe for church or round toe if you wear hose. I like it with just earrings as the model is wearing it. I think it is a cute Easter dress. Post pics if you wear it!
ETA: the second pic doesn't really go with the style but I like them and they would probably get a lot of wear.

I can't imagine these would get a lot of wear, but they would be cute with that dress.

Where did you find all of these shoes? I love the first ones best! And yes, I'd be going to church.

Totally depends on your body  type though - Spanx could very well do the trick. I didn't mean to sound critical! And I love the first shoes too, and the ones with the bow.

  • I would do button earrings (am I describing that right?)
     image

and a gathering of 3-ish chunky bead bracelets in shades of blue/teal that complement but don't match the dress.  Nothing on the neck line.

But really, I'd have to know what shoes you're doing.  If you're doing a very bold statement shoe in a wild pattern, then I'd do tiny stud ball earrings and a delicate bracelet like this https://www.etsy.com/listing/92504052/silver-arrow-bracelet?ref=favs_view_1 or a couple of these https://www.etsy.com/listing/97318769/personalized-friendship-bracelet-set?ref=favs_view_3 [pics below]

I didn't take it as critical at all!

Where does one find button earrings? They remind me of what my great-grandma used to wear!

  • Check Etsy - that's my answer for almost everything! I'm always amazed what I find there.

  • I first thought button earring as well or cluster earrings. Maybe even in a fun color like coral. I love teal/blue and coral together. I'd agree on a nude heel. Versatile and you can wear them for years. Super cute dress btw!

  • That's adorable! I think it walks the perfect line--you could bling it out and go 100% vintage, or you could wear simple pumps or flats and tone it down.  With that collar, you don't need much accessorizing--like others said, simple earrings (pearl studs would be nice and basic, too).  If you want to go more vintage, a fab brooch and t-strap shoes would be killer.

One thing--I would skip Spanx.  I find that with vintage/vintage-esque clothes they're nearly useless.  They flatten the wrong things and cause bulges in weird spots. If you're serious about vintage underpinnings, get a girdle (designed to trim in where vintage clothes are fitted).  If not, skip it.  Embrace the rounded tummy--look at pics of even slender movie stars from the era, and many have a rounded lower body.  Another note on fit--if the belt has loops, snip them off and put the belt at your natural waist.  It's nearly always a touch different from where dresses place the loops, because everyone is a little different.  That will minimize pooching, too, because it won't be forcing a waistline in the wrong area.

Thanks! Awesome tips. This could explain why I often don't like belts that come with outfits. I'm pretty long-waisted, so they're probably hitting me at the wrong spot.
