XP: Bittersweet... end of our BF journey

M turns 16m today and we had our last BF session yesterday morning. It just feels like it's the right time to stop. We have been down to just 1 morning session for the past month, and my supply took a big hit last month with my AF. My goal was 1 year so the last 4 months are "bonus" in my book. Even though I have been prepping myself emotionally for this, it is still a sad moment/day for me. I had a good look at M during our final session yesterday, and took a few mental pictures of him snuggling right up to me. M is not a cuddler so I know we will never ever be this close nor connected from now on. I've cried a few times already today but life goes on.

DH went to get M up this morning, changed his diaper and took him downstairs where I had b'fast waiting for him. M didn't seem to protest nor notice anything amiss. I am relieved that the transition went so easy, though I am sad that he didn't miss our snuggles.

We made it just about that long too. Over Christmas I was pregnant, had a stomach virus, and she was really preoccupied so it just worked out well. There were a few times after that when she pulled down my shirt and asked for milk. I let her nurse for a minute, but it hurt a lot and she wasn't really getting anything so she gave up.

I'm really happy for you that it was not traumatic for either of you. And you should be very proud of how far you have come. It is bittersweet for sure. But you should be very proud.

That's awesome that you made it so far! My body quit on me around 7 months and it was so hard. I remember my last morning session with my oldest (I put him on second that morning). I was sobbing and he just reached up and patted my face. It was such a sweet memory and I'm glad you got to experience those last few minutes with such a wonderful cuddle.

This made me tear up! A will be one tomorrow and I have dropped her to three sessions a day and giving her milk from my frozen stash in the afternoon. I'm starting to wean so we can do IVF this summer and it's very bittersweet!

I'm so happy it was a smooth transition for you both. I know exactly what you mean about the snuggles...*sniff sniff*

Great job! BF is a long emotional journey. A will be 1 next month and my goal is to quit then. He seems very preoccupied and I dont think he will miss it.

@pb_bride‌, I had a little tear when I read your post. I know this is coming for us too. I'm totally dreading weaning. J still nurses before and after nap and bed. She also gets "boobie band aids" when she gets hurt. So big hugs to you. And I'm glad it went well.

Good job & Congrats for bfing so long. So happy it was a smooth transition, for LO anyway!

We had originally planned on jumping back into IVF when DD was 3 months old. I couldn't do for a number of reasons, but mainly because I wasn't ready to stop BF. I have an RE consultation appointment the end of April. If we start right up, I will be weaning her at that point. I am so dreading it!
