Solids question.

1. LO loves solids since the day we started to give them to him. He has had no problems eating. We are trying to move towards chunkier foods and finger foods. He seems to gag often and get sick with the thicker stuff. I'm trying to teach him to chew. Any advice ?

2. What finger foods are you giving your kids? What size are they? My lo puts it all in his mouth and it's either so large it gags him or so small he can't pick it up.

Thanks, ladies. I feel like this should be simplier than it is...

Re: Solids question.

  • I have been giving LO overcooked pasta for a while and just mash it with a fork. I puree carrots but not to the "fluffly" stage, just a little chunk. I mash kiwi and strawberries up with a fork and put them in yogurt.
I give LO mum-mums, cheerios, bread, broken up veggie straws and bananas broken into chunks. LO gags when he puts too much in his mouth then I will take some of the food off the tray. He's a chipmunk and hords food in his mouth so I can't see.

  • Lots of kids skip stage 3 because it's a weird concept.  It's coming to them on a spoon and they've never had to chew anything that's been spoon fed before.  They don't understand they need to chew it so they try to swallow it, as is, and gag.  If he's not going for it, I wouldn't worry.  Just give him big stuff he can pick up and gum because that probably seems a lot more natural to them.

  • LO is 8 1/2 months and we do stage 2 purees but she also gets mum mums, puffs and small pieces of food like bananas, strawberries, corn, peas, eggs, rice, bread. Soon we will start giving her small pieces of meat and chicken.

  • We do a mix of purées and BLW. I'm trying to slowly move her off of purées completely. With solids, we started with bananas because it made me less nervous. We've done that 2 ways - just given her a chunk or broke it into small pieces. With the chunk she bit off too big a bite once and gagged and spit it out. Made me nervous but her body did what it's supposed to do and protected her. We've also given a long chunk of Apple that she gums on. And then small finger foods - she loves going after beans, Cheerios, puffs, etc. We will also do mushy foods like potatoes, avocado, kiwi, small peeled cut up pieces of grapes. Almost any food can be put into a form she can eat now.

  • we do a mix of puree and finger foods.  He usually gets a couple of ounces of puree then all finger foods.  we've done little pieces of mozzarella cheese, roasted asparagus (as is), oven baked zucchini(shaped like fries), pizza slices (we do a lot of homemade pizzas), various types of meat and fish (some slow cooked, some simply grilled), fruit chunks and more. Sometimes, he just hoards it in his mouth too long, and I will have to fish out chunks that he didn't swallow, and he gags at times, but I just keep an eye on it and brush up on my CPR, but he's only gagged but never choked.

  • Oh and my kid is a lunchbox.  I made mini muffins yesterday and gave him one and he literally bit HALF of it off in his first bite.

  • I give him finger foods that he can gum & mush easily, or ones that fall apart easily: bananas, peas, saltines, cooked carrots, small pieces of pasta, frozen blueberries that have been thawed (and thus mush when he picks them up), tiny pieces of cornbread, etc.  Mostly it's just for practice using his fingers and exploring food; he gets the bulk of his calories from breastmilk, formula, and babyfood I feed him with a spoon.
  • I cut fresh blueberries in half and she absolutely loves them. We do a lot of puffs and crunchies. I also buy a lot of frozen fruit, let it thaw, then use the pampered chef chopper thing on them and she likes to eat all that with a spoon. She hates to feed herself though because she gets mad when she can't get it in her mouth right away and will resort to taking it from my hand like she's a puppy.

  • These are very helpful tips ladies! I'm adding them to my grocery list!
  • The thing that made the biggest difference for my LO when it came to gagging was to limit how much food was on his tray. He just doesn't understand that his mouth can't hold it all at once. So at this point, I only give him 2-3 little pieces at a time.
