Difficulty Sleeping

Any one else having difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep? I am so tired when I go to bed, but have difficulty falling asleep. Then after finally falling asleep, I wake up several times a night. Sometimes to go to the bathroom, other times for no reason at all. Am I alone? It's terrible :-/ Any recommendations for how sleep better? Thanks!

Re: Difficulty Sleeping

  • I've been going through the same thing. I never can get a full nights sleep. And I thought 2nd trimester the energy was supposed to come back. I have none at all. I wish I could help on recommendations...I'd like some too.

  • I never ever sleep. I sleep maybe an hour at a time before waking up due to having to use the bathroom, being uncomfortable, crazy dreams etc. I take benedryl. It helps some.

  • Yup. I've had terrible sleeping issues pretty much since the BFP.

I had about a week at the very beginning of the 2nd trimester where I slept through the night, but then went right back to tossing and turning.  I'm pretty much never in deep sleep.  I wake up to switch sides maybe 20-25 times a night  :(

    It's the pits! I'm normally a sleeper!

  • Yep! I was up until 2am last night after going to bed at 10pm. I got up for the bathroom 3 times, then I learned why they say not to sleep on your back so I turned to my side then my brain decided it was time to think about the list of things I want to get done this week because ya know who needs sleep!

  • I'm the same. Keep waking during the night to toss and turn, can't get comfortable, then my brain decides to overthink all the things I need to do or decisions I've made (usually to do with baby items).

I have no ideas to help sorry.

  • I fall asleep on the couch most nights (which I've always done!) and can't fall asleep when I get in bed, which has never been the case. I've always been about asleep by the time my head hits the pillow, but not anymore. I end up playing on my phone and usually fall asleep bumping :/ Once I fall asleep, I wake up numb or uncomfortable and am usually kept awake by dh's snoring. I figure all this is preparation for LO keeping me up at night!

  • I've been having no problem falling asleep but I wake up between like 3-4 and then can't get back to sleep fir an hour or two! I used to think maybe I wasn't doing enough during the day but I'm still always tired too!

I'm at a loss. I started keeping water by the bed I think that helps me a little.. until I wake up to pee :(

  • I've been having trouble sleeping too.  I have a hard time falling asleep and then I wake up at least 2 times to pee, and probably 4 or 5 more times for no real reason - I need to turn over etc.

Frustrating.  With my first I slept like the dead.

  • I consistently wake up every 2-ish hours to pee, and then often can't fall back to sleep due to my nasal congestion...it's pretty terrible!  I've also started tossing and turning more...I can still sleep partially on my stomach which helps, but I'm thinking that those days are numbered.  I'm debating investing in a pregnancy pillow soon!

  • My latest sleep issue is carpal tunnel. I've been waking up 10-15 times per night because my hand safe numb or cramped. I just picked up some wrist braces from my midwife this afternoon, so hopefully they will help me get some sleep tonight!

  • Times like this I would say take a shot of tequila! Yeaaaaa, not so much now.

I don't have trouble falling asleep, but I do wake up a lot at night. Uhhh, annoying. I usually just lurk the bump boards. Then my LO wakes up for a bottle. Yay! I forgot what sleep is like. :(

  • Same here. I bought a maternity pillow over the weekend and it seems to help.
  • Same issues here!! Sometimes I'll still take 1/2 tab of unisom before bed. I still wake up to pee and turn over, but I don't stay awake as long. The nights I take it I sleep much better than when I don't, but I don't want to be taking it every night :(

Yes! In the past week or so I've developed some insomnia, have trouble falling asleep (even though I'm exhausted) & waking up at like 4am and can't fall back asleep for a few hours. It's terrible!

  • Been a little over a week now, my body is not happy.
  • I am awake right now while DH and the dog are just snoring away! My Snoogle helps but I am just wide awake, yet rubbing my eyes. It doesn't help I pee on the hour every hour
  • I have had three nights of great sleep in a row, and I think I know why: I started doing an exercise video just before bed. Then I take a hot shower, massage body lotion into my skin and I sleep like a baby.

I stop drinking after 6pm so I only have to pee once during the night.

The exercise isn't intense and very tiring but it definitely helps. I found some great videos on youtube for pregnant women.
  • Yes, I am with you on the lack of sleep! Which is exactly why I am posting this at 2am... My doc said to take a Unisom before bed which usually gets me through a couple of hours, at least.
  • Being sick certainly doesn't help!  It's 3am and I don't even want to attempt to lay down because of my congestion....tomorrow is going to be a longggg day!!

  • I fall asleep ok, but wake up around 1-1:30 every morning and am awake for two hrs. I will doze for 20-30 min at a time until my alarm goes off at 4:45. Pregnancy insomnia blows.

    Mommy to R (8.23.11) and K (6.21.14).

  • I fall asleep easily, probably because I'm still taking Unisom at night for nausea, but I roll around a lot. My hips hurt if I lay on one side too long and my left arm always falls asleep when I sleep on that side. Plus I get up to pee 2-3 times and I get really thirsty so I sip water sometimes throughout the night. DH snores, but has been sleeping in the guest room for a few weeks now. I feel bad, but I will admit I sleep so much better when he's not there, especially when he takes DS's monitor for the night.

  • My doctor said I could take 2 Tylenol PM at night for insomnia. I take a half & it usually does the trick. I've been waking up at 4 am despite whatever time I go to bed. It's awful.

  • I talked to my doctor about this. I don't know if anyone remembers my public sleep induced breakdown I posted :P but I feel ya, man. Just this morning I woke up at 3a and then my body and brain refused to let me sleep. But just when I was about to fall into a much needed drowse (after my alarm went off to get up for the day) my GD cat jumped on me. @jamboreejess: perhaps our cats are siblings? 99 percent of the time my cat is the sweetest, cuddliest little guy, but that 1 percent is rough when he's being a huge asshat.

Sorry, anyways OP: talked to my doctor and she suggested all the normal things like making sure not to drink anything 2 hours before going to bed, staying away from a lot of stimulus right before bed, propping yourself up and only if you get yourself into a really bad state should you take a Tylenol PM. She mentioned, "it's your body's way of preparing you for getting no sleep when your infant comes." She said if you're getting 5 or 6 hours a night and are able to function that you should be fine. I would mention it to your OB next time you're in or call, they might be able to make different suggestions.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for your replies everyone!! I now know I am definitely not alone in this! I had always heard about morning sickness, frequent urination, and heartburn when it comes to pregnancy, but no one warned me about the insomnia! I figured I'd lose sleep AFTER the baby was born!

Have you tried the breathe right strips? They really help my stuffy nose!

  • I can fall asleep no problem, but I can't seem to stay asleep for more than a couple hours at a time (sometimes less). I feel like I haven't got a good nights rest in ages.

  • I have this terrible cough to add to having to pee every hour and the constant flipping from one side to the other. On top, for some reason my son yells for me at least once, sometimes 3 times per night to come lay with him and warm him up. Daylight savings Spring ahead has been fun too! V So yes, you are not alone, night time sleep has been sucking!
  • Sleep what the heck is that? Lucky to get 2 maybe 3 continuos hours then it's tossing and turning. I hate this crap but, the bright side DH got me a snoogle and it is my new best friend!

  • Half of a unisom has helped me... Normally if I wake up in the middle of the night I can't go back to sleep and since I've been taking unisom, I have no troubles going back to sleep... and I always get 8 hours of sleep. My doctor said I can take it as long as I need it.

  • So at my appt a while ago I told the dr I had trouble sleeping but then my hubby stepped in to tell them it's more than trouble and went on about everything, every detail. That had me try a few things and when those didn't work I had to do a sleep study. Well the results weren't good from that so now I have to do a 3 day sleep study and then go home and do a sleep study at home for another 14 days. I'm used to working 8-16 hr days 5-6 days a week and then coming home to watch 3 kids while DH is at work and if they don't sleep, I don't sleep and I go back to work. I thought that I was just used to the schedule but apparently even when I sleep (about 2-3 hrs) I never actually sleep. Bummer.

  • Sleeping is for suckers >.<
  • I've been taking Unisom & melatonin every night since I got into the 2nd trimester. Otherwise I just lay awake all night, get frustrated & cry. It's pathetic lol. I was taking tylenol pm for a while but switched to unisom because I didn't need the pain meds & didn't want to take things I didnt' need.
    GL!

I'm actually having a harder time staying awake. I could honestly sleep 12 hours a day and be completely fine with it. I want to nap all day long. This creates a problem since I work full time and my husband has been on the evening shift the last two weeks. We've gotten take out a lot since I can't muster any energy up.
