Spitting Up a Lot

My newborn is three weeks old and he spits up quite frequently throughout the day. The hospital sent us home with Enfamil Infant formula but we had to switch to Enfamil Gentlease because he was having trouble digesting the Enfamil Infant formula. He still has tummy troubles and gas and possibly some reflux but I think the Gentlease is a little easier on him. I'm not sure if it's the formula or the kind of bottles we are using that makes him so spitty. We are currently using the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles with the slow flow nipples. While he's eating, it seems like a lot of formula leaks out of his mouth around the nipple and when I take the nipple out of his mouth, it is kind of bent. When we burp him, he usually spits up afterwards as well. Any suggestions or advice on what we should try in order to reduce the spitting up?

Re: Spitting Up a Lot

  • We had the same problem with our little one! We also used tommee tippee bottles to start, we switched to Dr. Browns and that helped reduce the spit up quite a bit! and so did switching to ready to feed instead of powder formula.

We spent a while switching formulas per doctors advice to rule out milk protein allergies and other issues, but in the end we ended up putting her on reflux meds which help her a lot, and now we also thicken her formula with rice cereal. So I'd say get him an appointment and start with that, it takes a while to figure it out, and it gets very, very frustrating but hang in there!

AND,while your trying to find a permanent solution, you NEED to try wellaments gripe water!! It was a miracle for my daughter! I could only find it at Walgreens and you go through the bottles pretty quickly, but totally worth it for us and I tried a few different kinds of gripe water, they did nothing but this one really helped!!

  • We swapped formulas a couple of times and tried several different bottle combinations before we found something that actually worked. We ended up using MAM nipples (low flow and sort of flat) with Avent bottles.

No two babies are the same and it takes some trial and error to figure out what is the best for each one.

We also mix a few gas drops in the formula to kill all of the bubbles in it when we mix it. That seemed to help also. Gripe water is fantastic when fussy because of upset tummy.
Proud 40 year old, first time daddy!
