Fighting Oversupply?

I feel bad when I feed Anna-banana because I feel like I'm choking her with my milk everytime she eats! This is so frustrating.... I don't get how I ended up with oversupply though... I've only pumped a handful of times at the time when I would normally feed LO and just enough that I had enough for DH to feed her. My LC has offered a few ideas to try to 'slow the flow' and to lower my supply a bit but, it makes my boobs feel like they might explode! Anybody else dealing with this BS?! While I don't wish this on anybody I would like to feel like I'm not all alone with this crap. LO is very upset with my boob, it's like a love-hate relationship, and she has major fits and kicks me right in the incision  :(( and then I cry with her.

I'm right there with you. I block feed and yes the other boob hurts...and leaks a lot. I hate it, but it worked out well last time, only had to pump once a shift at work (12 hrs) and no supply drops...silver lining?

  • yeah mine chokes with let down every time. My LC says give it time to regulate. It literally just sprays everywhere if she pulls off, which she always does. So I keep a wash cloth underneath her to keep from getting soaked and I try to pull her off as soon as I feel let down to avoid choking. Wish I had advice but you are not alone!!

  • I'm totally with you on this! I have started icing my boobs once a day in between feedings. It doesn't feel awesome but it seems to help a bit!

  • Yes sometimes! I ep and don't pump too frequently (usually only 4x/day). When I get a clogged duct I pump more and that always create oversupply for me. So the clog is because I don't pump enough and when I pump more to clear it I get oversupply for days :-/

  • And one more thing: I want to TP everyone who tells me how lucky I am to be dealing with oversupply. No.
This!! I've been told this by every nurse I've talked to. No, this is not fun.
Aw geez - for me nurses have been the only people sympathetic to how awful it is! I was mentally dishing out so many TPs to the women at my breastfeeding clinic who all chimed in with "oh so lucky! Jealous!" When they heard me asking the LC for help. Thankfully she gave me a very understanding eye roll.
Ugh I have avoided going to the breastfeeding support group because I don't want to hear those comments... Thankfully my LC travels and comes out to me (more than an hour away from the base). I'm still taking Tylenol around the clock for pain in my incision (we aren't even 3 weeks pp till tomorrow) but I've had oversupply since day 6 pp... The nurse gave me some advice and we are trying that and are block feeding and recommended not pumping at all (so I'm trying that now). On a side note I will totally try the icing my boobies, maybe that will help more than the soothies that the LC gave me.

Agreed. Because I love that my baby chokes every time she needs to eat and then barfs and hiccups due to an overfilled stomach! Not to mention engorgement and painful milk ducts...

  • Ah the joy of engorgement :) I exclusively pump, but now have a fridge and freezer fast filling up with BM where I get double a feed off per pump. But the hand expressing for relief just seems to make let down worse (forgot to put bra on before feeding LO tonight, had to stop after 3 mins when bathrobe and nightie stuck to me and puddle started forming on the floor) - would quite like to have to top up with formula rather then mop floors several times a day due to leakage!!!

I'm also dealing with this! I've only been pumping once a day just for a freezer supply. I have been icing in between feedings. I also take a few showers a day if I can (I know those can be a luxury). I haven't found any one thing that does the trick though. I'm at about 6 weeks PP and still trying to figure it out. I'm with Tlex with the receiving blankets though. Sometimes I put a bib on her as well. :( good luck!

  • Add me to this club. My poor dd always gets a shower. And last night she had projectile vomit/spit up. I'm pretty sure it was just from oversupply( and everything I've read seems to support this) but I've freaked myself out that it's something serious with her stomach.

  • There are also good positions to help baby deal with forceful letdown: baby sitting upright, side lying, and then with you on back and baby on top facing down (think it's called the down-under or Australian hold). These positions help baby be in control and allow her to pull off when it becomes too much.

I definitely second the collection of burp cloths always around. We use cloth diapers to catch because they're super absorbent.

    Good luck!

  • I'm dealing with this as well and it's not fun. Plus, I rarely leak so she's getting it all when she nurses. She gags and coughs and gets super pissed. BFing is hard even for a TTM. Plus, we are dealing with reflux issues now...... Sigh. Babies are hard.
  • @cksmith29 yeah they are and bf is hard but, totally worth it.

@NextVerseUnknown I love the side-lay position, now that I am comfortable enough to lay on my side after my c-section LO thinks it's great too! We gag alot less in that position!

Side note: need more than 4 burp cloths, they fill up too fast with how much I leak.... and I only have a hand full of blankets that would work....

  • I think I'm starting to get a handle on this whole oversupply thing thanks to extended block feeding! I am having fewer chocking of the baby thanks to my horrible boobies trying to gag baby! They still hurt like crap but, are taking longer in between use before they are too painful to wait any longer! HAZZAAAAAAAAAAAH! How are the rest of you ladies coming along in this uphill battle?
