@jennish11 is correct. You shouldn't count hiccups during a kick count. While kick counts are to ensure "baby is alive" they also monitor movement in general. If they are not moving enough it *could* signal something is wrong. I was told to call L & D if I felt less than 6 movements in 2 hours. If I feel 4 obviously the baby is alive and moving but that's not regular movement so they would want me to come in for a check.
Different practices have different standards. For instance my OB's office says I should feel 10 movement in 2 hours- not 6- and a lack of the 10 warrants drinking of cold water, taking a little walk, lying down and trying again- not an instant call to L&D since baby could just be sleeping. Double-check with yours if hiccups count towards the kick-count total. Of course, if you feel like something is wrong, it's always better to err on the side of caution and call.
Hiccups should not be counted during kick counts. The purpose of doing kick counts is to become aware if your baby's movement patterns. For example, I know that I alway feel 10 movements in less than 15 minutes. If it should ever take a full 2 hours for me to feel 10 movement, that would be considered decreased movement and I would right to the hospital.
I hope your baby starts moving enough for you and you are able to get some reassurance.

We encourage you to begin performing daily kick counts at 28 weeks of pregnancy. They are simple to do. Pick a time of the day your baby is usually active, such as after a meal. Ideally, lie down on your left side and place a hand on your abdomen. Count each time the baby moves, whether it is a kick, roll, punch, turn or stretch. Do not count hiccups or movements the baby makes if you push against him or her.
I still haven't been told to do kick counts. I have an AP so I am not sure of that's why. My doctor just asks "so are you feeling the baby" at each appointment and that's all she's said so far.
If I were you, I wouldn't obsess over it too much unless it goes on. But that's just me. Good luck!

A lot of OBs/MWs don't ask for them. Mine doesn't. Only wants me to be aware of movement so that I know if if decreases.
My OB doesn't have me counting kicks either, even though I asked after telling her I will have a few active days and then a less active day which makes me nervous (get out the orange juice!). She says just pay attention in general and make sure I'm at least feeling her move every 3-4 hours.
She's slowly been having decreased movement over the last few weeks so the doctor wants me to stay alert.
Thank you
Call your OB. It's better to let them know and see what they want to do then to just wait.
Kitchencolors: kick counts are not checking to see if the baby is alive. Decreased fetal movement is associated with a deteriorating environment in the uterus. If the baby is more "focused" on living on the bare minimum, it won't be moving as much.

Hiccups don't count.
My doctor knows and suggested the kick count. I barely felt her move at all today so I'm going to call in the morning
I'm glad you talk to your doctor. Always call your dr. for any concern you have. Dr. Google and the bump are not a good source when it's concerning you and your LO's health. I downloaded app for if or when my little guy starts to slow down. It's called baby kicks and it's free.
Kick counts are to ensure baby is still alive, correct? Hiccups = life, do they not?
Edit cause words be hard. Yo.
DD's movements slowed down a lot last time when I developed issues. I mentioned concerns to my mother and she made me go to emerg. They started inducing the next day.
I still felt hiccups. Just not as many kicks, etc.
When I delivered, the placenta was small and baby wasn't getting enough nutrients, so she ended up being small as well.
It's not just about making sure baby is currently alive. It's about making sure that baby is born alive and healthy.

Was the small placenta/ baby not noticed in regular care/growth scans? Surprise at birth? I personally get the "has baby been moving around a lot for you?" "Yup" kind of check-up. They've seen how naughty she is on every single u/s. Most days I'm grateful for even the slightest lapse in organ abuse due to a fetus nap.

We only have one ultrasound midway through the pregnancy unless there is a special reason for another one. My first one came back fine, (17 weeks, baby was measuring slightly ahead). The BP issues started later in the pregnancy, so it wasn't picked up before then. The small baby/placenta was indeed a surprise.
Interesting, why only one u/s? Personal preference, or regular practice for your area?
It's regular practice here. When they admitted me, they were going to order a second one because of the BP, but they changed their mind since they decided to induce regardless.
Very interesting. I've had 5 I think. 1- first appointment around 7w, had some spotting/bleeding like with last pregnancy, so they wanted to check that out, found the bleed just near the sack like last time 2- dating u/s around 13w 3- a/s 21w, she wouldn't behave well enough for the tech to get all the measurements she needed 4- 25w follow-up a/s, was just as naughty, but tech managed to get what she needed after some cold apple juice 5- 30w, fundal measurement was placing me at 34w at my 28w appointment, so they checked growth an fluid, large baby, excess fluid.

It's not really that common to get more than one or two per pregnancy. I'm lucky that my OB does a dating one, the anatomy scan, and a growth scan at 35 weeks. I also opted for the NT scan (but that was optional). A lot of girls I know only get the anatomy scan.

And my midwives never told me to count kicks now or then. I personally just look for regular behavior, which in this case means tons of rolls.
