calming baby techniques- post em here!

I know we have discussed this many times in various threads but I thought it might help if we compile our tips and tricks in one thread? Have we done this yet? What do you do that calms your fussy baby? Do you have a good bedtime routine/tip? How do you deal with a no napper? Any other tips/tricks to share?

My best tip is to watch The Happiest Baby on the Block. These techniques have worked (in various forms) on all 3 of my kids. We also use the white noise on the DVD at night and it seems to works better than any other. Netflix has the discs but Amazon has it on instant streaming- worth the $9.99, I promise!

This LO is currently in a no nap phase. The only way she will nap is in the Moby/K'tan. She fusses at first but she is out in 5 min flat.

Re: calming baby techniques- post em here!

  • The following works best for us:
    - Nursing
    - Sleep sheep
    - Swaddling
    - rocking/bouncing/other motion
    - car/stroller rides
  • Loading the player...
  • White noise, vibration (from seat, or patting her butt), pacifier, movement (swing, car, stroller)... Also, softly stroking her skin (cheeks, forehead, arms). She also has a spot on the back of her head that she rubs herself, seemingly for comfort.

Being held and walked around and walk around nursing, Rock and play on vibrate, Mamaroo swing (only works for 5-10min, but takes things down a notch), Space heater nearby and laying on blanket on floor, Wubba-nub pacifier (given to us by our Pedi), Daddy has good luck with soothing talk and upper chest rubs (on her breastbone), Tight Swaddle

  • Nothing new to add except that he has a spot on the bridge of his nose that if you rub gently knocks him right out. DS1s spot was his temple. Worked like a charm once I found the spot.
  • My LO likes to have a bath with me, and will fall asleep on my chest. Trouble is I can't get out if the tub without waking him up.

Shower or tub running works best for DS3.  He's a super diva - a white noise machine won't cut it!

DS2 liked the Sleep Sheep.  DS1 hated everything all the time.  He was a fussy baby :)

  • Arms down swaddling and bouncing on the yoga ball.

Also, sometimes when she is really fussy, laying her down and letting her look around calms her. It stops her screaming, then I can pick her back up and rock or bounce her.

Also, she is starting to like her moby pretty well.
  • Getting in the shower has made this one knock out.

Also, laying him next to my left thigh while I pump in bed will do it.

    Patting back, butt.

Shushing and carrying him around over my shoulder while patting.

  • Looking at our overhead fan on low usually will calm DS down if he is just a little fussy. If he is gassy he loves to be held upright and gently bounced, his legs end up doing a little bicycle movement but something about the upright position is soothing for him where flat bicycle = screaming.

  • laying chest to chest, patting her butt, shushing gently, giving her a binky if she's reallyyyy upset, singing made up songs. her favorite is "hey Molly Molly Molly, hey Molly Molly Joan" sung to the tune of hey lolly.

nighttime: dark/dimly lit room, diaper, bottle, jammies, binky, swaddle, kisses, RnP

  • My iPhone!! I never thought a one month old would be interested in cartoons. He also loves the TV. He will lie in my arms and watch TV very patiently and fall asleep. I'm beginning to dread using this too often!
  • For white noise I use the app called relax melodies. You can layer different sounds, I like the thunderstorm one and so does LO!

Bouncing on yoga ball, a bath, the weirdest is laying him on the changing pad facing the wall
He stares at it and it soothes him....

For some strange reason , DD loves laying on her changing pad too! Usually facing the wall, sometimes towards the middle of the room. I thought it was because she was watching my shadow. But we lay her on that and instantly, she is quiet and calm

Swaddle. Boob. Swing. Paci. Those are pretty much what does it and making sure I put her down before she gets over tired.

  • My LO loves music. Maybe it's a product of before she was born, but mid to high volume (baby volume, not adult) music instantly calms her down. Any music will do.

I also second turning off all distractions and darkening the room. All soothing movements/sounds work ten fold in a dark room.

  • Getting DD2 to leave LO alone/be quiet will usually do the trick. ;) Starting to feel bad for LO being DD3 as the siblings don't allow for much quiet sometimes.

  • Our changing table is in the bathroom, so I have our handy dandy hair dryer near by lol. I dry baby after I use the wipes, and she loves it! It gets her so relaxed, she just turns into a little sleeping rag doll.
  • Ring sling for the win!! Restless? Grumpy? Over-tired? Gassy? Mystery complaint? Just tuck him in the sling and it's, lights out and cooing in five minutes flat.

Sometimes distraction works like a charm though I'd they aren't sleepy at all though - if I start singing a silly song and dancing from room to room with LO, he'll get totally into all the stimulation and forget about whatever was pissing him off in the first place!
  • Not much works consistently with mine. Some limited success with sitting in her bouncer in the bathroom with the overhead fan on. Typical boob and car rides work always.

Over my left shoulder (seems to prefer the left?) so she can "look" out of the patio doors behind our sofa, pat the butt, rub the back, kiss the top of her head and repeat.
Being in a seated position is also a favourite, so we sit her on our knees in the burping position, with one hand under her chin and rub/pat her back....she passes out in minutes and can be slid closer to our bodies for the transfer to cuddles :)
