Whole Milk = Bad Constipation but Soy Milk/SILK = horrible diarreha :-(( What next?

I can't seem to find the right kind of milk for my son who is almost 16 months.  We gradually switched him to whole milk at a year and it gave him horrible constipation.  We supplemented with all the methods of prune juice and the like and yes it helped some, but eventually the constipation was too bad.  So we decided to try SILK (the soy milk) to see if it would help.  And holy cow his diapers have been EXPLOSIVE to the point I was stripping his crib 3-5 times a day.  I stopped the Soy milk and the explosive diapers went away.  It is like one extreme or the other so I am not sure which is best to continue with :-(  I wonder if the Silk Almond Milk would work.  Although...I guess that is still soy and would not make a difference.  Has anyone had their LO on soy and it took a couple days for them to adjust and have regular poop instead of explosive diarreha like poop?

  • Almond milk is not soy. You could try that, coconut, hemp, or goats milk.

  • Ok great I am going to try that.  I guess since it was SILK I assumed silk stood for soy milk of some kind.  Thanks!
  • My son drinks almond or hemp milk. We stay away from soy and rice milks. Too much sugar. We do the Blue Diamond almond milk in unsweetened vanilla, and Tempt hemp milk in unsweetened vanilla. Both taste pretty ok and my son digs it. Yiu just have to make sure they get plenty of good fats in their diet.

  • I had the same constipation issue and my DD also developed a horrible rash from cows milk. After speaking with her pedi we switched to goats milk and her poop is normal. She seems to enjoy the goats milk and her pedi recommended it over any other type of milk.
  • lalamama81 - that is what i have been doing, just not giving "milk" and he seems totally fine.  although, i did give him a whole serving of yogurt yesterday trying to get some dairy in him and he screamed for a little while (no idea if he was having a stomach ache or something, he stopped crying after about 30 min and seemed fine after that).  but still hasnt pooped since stopping the soy milk.  hoping he goes today!!
  • My DD had the same issues. She's fine on 2% milk! which is what the pediatrician recommended. And we have to ensure her skinny little tushy is getting fat from other sources both for weight gain and brain development.
  • We use Silk Almond Milk because it does not have carrageenan in it and some say it's bad some say it's not. I figured why chance it if we can have a brand without it. We use the Original with sweetener because A) Unsweetened is gross and in my opinion too low calorie and B) it still has less sugars than whole milk does so I figured why not. Sugar is sugar whether it is Lactose or Sucrose your body breaks it down the same way.

For fats he gets guacamole, almond butter, peanut butter, butter on some veggies, etc. There are an endless supply of good fats to make up for the lack of whole milk. He does however get whole milk yogurt which he loves and doesn't cause any issues.
