Buying a twin bed

Keagan has been in his crib with the front rail off for about 8 months. We got more money back in our tax return than we expected so we are going to use the money to buy him a new bed. Where would you guys suggest? All the other furniture in his room is pottery barn, so I was looking there, the Kendall bed is on sale for $499, but that seems like a lot for a twin bed. Am I being too cheap? Where else should I look? I want something that will hold up and last 8 to 10 years.

Is there room for a full? If you want something to last until he is a teen, I would get a bigger bed.

  • I would check craigslist first. I got some awesome PB stuff on there for a great deal!

  • His room is really small. We don't think a full will fit with a dresser and desk. The Kendall bed in a full is 649, so it isn't that much more expensive. I'm being way too indecisive about this.

  • I did check craiglist, there is nothing in our area that wouldn't turn into a huge project.

  • We went to Raymour & Flanagan. We've always had good luck with them for other furniture, and we found something we liked that he could keep through high school if we want.

  • @meoldy921 is that a local place? I'm nervous to go to a furniture store because I'm not sure about their warranties (we have had issues in the past). If you don't mind sharing, how much did you spend on a twin bed?

R&F is a chain furniture store, although I'm not sure everywhere that they're located. We've bought from them for our bedroom, DS' bedroom, living room and dining room. We got DS this bed, and it's $500.

The closest one is about an hour for us. Hmm that bed is really pretty! Ok, so I guess I'm not crazy to spend 500 on a bed, thanks!

  • Don't go to Rooms To Go ;). Haha. I agree, that does sound like a lot of money. The bunk beds we are looking at are around that price. I think that unfortunately it's a need not a want, so if they're expensive it's just something you have to do :(

I just can't find a cheaper alternative, besides like target or something and I don't think that would last!

  • I'm generally cheap - so I didn't spend $500 on a twin bed.  If I thought we were going to use it for 8-10 years, I would have spent more, but we plan to put Brody in a full at some point, so we needed something for 3-5 years.

We bought his bed at Ikea.  I think the bed was about $150 and then bought a decent mattress at a local furniture place.  It's still in great shape 2 years later and Brody is not very gentle on it (jumping on bed, playing with toys in his room, etc.).

  • My mom bought my niece and nephew a bunk bed off of Zulily. They have them every now and then. It's actually quite nice and only cost their standard $10 to ship. Or if you're handy, ana-white.com has some plans for twin beds that turned out pretty cute.

I agree with this. I would put the money in a good mattress and a less expensive headboard. But we have James box spring and mattress on the floor because I couldn't decide what to get and now I like the low profile so we will keep it this way for awhile. Probably until the boys share a room in a couple of years.

  • I think we are going to go with the full. The Kendall bed you don't need a box spring for, so we are going to get him a mattress with bunkie board so it isn't too high off the ground. I've spent hours researching mattresses, I know I will go top of the line for that.
