Babies: 6 - 9 Months

9 month old stopped eating solid food

my little man is almost 9 months old. since he was around 7 months we started with the Gerber puree foods stage 1 then worked our way up through the stage 3 foods (like puree turkey and rice). at the begining of eating "real/solid" food, he fought us a little. He didn't seem to like the taste or texture of going from formula in a bottle to food on a spoon. Daycare helped us a lot and then he was eating like a CHAMP! I mean, he would eat 3 spare meals and 2 snacks a day, sometimes each sitting would be 2 containers of food. He has 2 bottom teeth already and the top have been acting like they will cut for over a month now. about 2 weeks ago he got sick with a stomach bug going around and ever since then he won't touch solid food. we tried puree bananas (his favorite!), pieces of baked chicken, all the usual gerber foods and NOTHING! he screams and fights in his high chair, he try to let him feed himself by chopping up the chicken in front of him and he throws it on the ground... it's very frustrating! We know he needs to learn to chew, he still gags and struggles with it. But we don't know what else to do. We try showing him how to chew by giving him a gerber puff and putting one in my mouth and doing the exaggerated chew. he starts to mimic me, realizes theres something in his mouth and spits it out.  the dr. said it could just be teething or he's trying to be independent. but I'm worried that he isn't getting the right nutrition only taking bottles.

Has anyone else experienced this? what did you do? Should we try to take him back to the dr for testing?

Re: 9 month old stopped eating solid food

  • I would just give him some time. I think this is a normal thing to happen and if your LO has been sick- he might just not be ready to start eating solids again. I believe that LO's can go through phases of not eating a ton and eating a ton- kind of similar to how we are. As long as your LO is drinking enough BM or formula- he should be fine. Just keep offering as you normally do.

  • I think the saying is, "Food before one is just for fun."  Like PP said, as long as he is getting enough BM or formula, I wouldn't worry.  I would just keep trying to introduce solids again until he comes around.

  • Being sick really throws them so I'd just relax about it.  Don't make it a fight.  If he eats, fine.  If  not, just keep offering.  He'll rebound :)
