ACA

Not trying to start a debate ;) just curious: If you have insurance through your or SO's employer, did you still look into the plans available in the marketplace (is that what it's called?)?

We are all under DH's plan through his work. It's a pretty good plan, probably a bit pricey, but we've never had a reason to change. And even after the ACA passed and then went into effect, it just never occurred to either of us to look into it. But now I'm thinking maybe it would save money, we'd be "helping out" in the sense that they need more healthy adults to sign up, etc. Anyway, just wondering.

Re: ACA

  • We have always had insurance through H and it's been fine and I haven't noticed much change since the ACA passed.  My parents, however, did look into and saved money.

Although (ETA), they are trying to tell me Isla only gets 12 visits of speech therapy a year ALL OF THE SUDDEN.  Ridiculous.

I am currently submitting an application to Medicaid based on diagnosis for Isla.  I am hoping it helps us out with her therapy because it is getting pricey.
That is crazy!! So what, they expect that therapy once a month would be totally fine? I don't understand how they can limit beneficial services to children.

  • Honestly, I didn't even look.  We have pretty great insurance through DH's workplace, and it's not very expensive (to us).  I'm holding on to this insurance as long as I can!

  • The way insurance is set up with my employer, there isn't a way to save. Basically, they'd take out the same regardless. But we have decent coverage based on what I hear from my birth month group.

  • We did not look into the marketplace. Our employer (we work for the same company) offers good coverage. They did have to make a bunch of changes this year due to the law, and supposedly we should be saving money on this new plan, but we'll see.
I think in most cases the marketplace is a better option for those without employer provided insurance.
  • no I haven't looked. we get insurance through my job, and while it's not as great as a previous employer plan, it'll do for now.

  • I haven't looked either because I get great, inexpensive family coverage at work. I have a former coworker who recently opened her own counseling practice (her husband is self employed too) and she says she has gotten coverage for her family of 3 for about $440 a month, which includes a $175 per month tax credit. She said the tax credit is based on income and that the coverage is comparable to the coverage my employer offers...$30 copay for MD visits, $30 for name brand Rx, $15 for generic , $350 deductible per person, $1050 family deductible.

  • We have really good insurance, DH pays nothing for his, and pay less that 200 a month for LO and myself. DH quoted through the market place out of curiousity and it was hundreds of dollars a month. We wouldn't ever switch.

  • DS and I are on my health care coverage at work. DH is on his own through his employer.
  • We have coverage through my employer and no I didn't look into the plans in the marketplace.
