I need some career advice myself...

I was a teacher for the last 6 years and LOVED it.  This year I got promoted to a resource position that came with a great raise.  However, it looks like there's a good chance that I will be destaffed back to a teacher next year due to budget cuts.  My principal wants to keep me in a different resource position (at lower teacher pay) and I feel like if the pay is the same, I'd rather go back to the classroom.  In fact, I have been told about a classroom position with a slightly longer contract length (more $$) but it's outside my school so I don't want to offend my principal by pursuing it.  

I also don't want to leave my current job until I'm officially destaffed.  BUT I don't know when that will be and I don't want this other position to get away from me.  I also think that it would be pretty unattractive to a principal to hire someone in the summer who will be on maternity leave by the first week of school so I'd like to have this figured out sooner than later.  Should I just stay at my school and see what happens?  I'd really like to do the other job.  I even had a dream about it before I heard about it!

  • You know what you are capable of....however, I would not want to start a new teaching job and then leave.  You will have trouble figuring things out, bonding with students, working out your lessons if their expectations are different or it's not a grade you taught...  I would take the easiest thing this year and look in a year or two.  Unless you are really, really in need of cash, will it matter if there is slightly lower pay?  The resource position or back up resource position would not put you in a position where you would be walking into a classroom midway through the semester and trying to establish authority with a class, and that would be important to me.  Plus, unless the new resource position has a major learning curve and/or very intense expectations, it probably won't be too bad to try to do it on limited sleep, without much prep, etc.

  • Thanks @brachysira for the advice.  The new classroom job would be pretty stress free, it's a special program where I would only have 8 young children in my class and 2 aides.  I feel like if I stay as a resource I'm going to be expected to do a lot more work, which is ok, but I'd rather do what I'm passionate about.  Thanks again for weighing in.

  • Sure...no one can tell you what to do...but take the least work, whatever you guess that will be.  Perhaps it is a new job, although if the aides hate you b/c they think you are not with it, that could be bad long term.  Nothing is easy when you have a little baby at home...especially thinking about work.
  • Well I would consider things like retirement money, are you already vested at your current district? Pay at the new school, will they give you all your years experience? Sick days, how will your sick days transfer? 

    Is it in a different district?
  • It's the same district.  I've actually done the teaching job I considered over the summer and really liked it.

  • I would pick anything that will make you have a less stressful life! It is SO hard to go back to work after having a baby.

  • Are you tenured as a resource teacher? (I assume so, but worth considering)
    I'd stay in the job you love as long as possible if you're guaranteed a position, but if you aren't, I would accept the teaching position.
